Yesterday, members of the Leadership Johnston 2026 Cohort visited Wilson’s Mills High. Superintendent Dr. David Pearce presented the school district’s recent academic performance data for the 2025-2026 school year, including district-wide goals and objectives, before Principal Chad Jewett escorted the cohort on a tour of the school.
The cohort includes members from many agencies and organizations including, Johnston County Clerk's Office, The Old Mill Group Real Estate, First Citizens Bank, Bright Mind Behavioral Health Center, UNC Health Johnston, KS Bank, State of North Carolina, North Carolina Department of Revenue, Grifols Shared Services North America, Inc., Partnership for Children of Johnston County, Johnston County Public Schools, Johnston Community College, BHW LLC, Frost and Fyre, Wintergreen Hospitality, CommWell Health, Johnston County Education Foundation.
The event provided a valuable opportunity for Johnston County Public Schools and local business partners to collaborate in supporting students’ career, college, and life readiness and preparing them for success in the workforce.

Grade-level proficiency, which is defined as students earning a Level 3, 4 or 5 on End-of-Grade and End-of-Course assessments, increased an impressive 3.8 percentage points, rising from 57.2% in 2025 to 61.0% in 2026.
These results are an exciting reflection of the progress taking place across JCPS and demonstrate that our district is moving Forward with strong momentum toward higher levels of student achievement and academic growth.

Graduation rates continued to improve during the 2025-2026 school year, with JCPS reaching an outstanding 92.6%, compared to the state rate of 88.8%.
A graduation rate that exceeds the state average is a significant accomplishment, and it reinforces JCPS’s commitment to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed and graduate prepared for college, careers, and life beyond high school.
This achievement reflects the collective efforts of our entire school community to provide the high-quality education students need to reach graduation and prepare for their next chapter.
Having 91% of our schools earn an A, B, or C is a meaningful accomplishment that demonstrates the strength of academic performance across JCPS and reflects the hard work of students, educators, school leaders and families. This success is further supported by the fact that 73.5% of JCPS schools met or exceeded growth expectations, with four schools ranking among the top 20% of schools statewide for academic growth.
Together, these results demonstrate the continued progress taking place across our schools and reinforce JCPS’s commitment to providing students with the high-quality education they deserve.

The overall performance composite is a measure that reflects the percentage of students who demonstrate grade-level proficiency on state assessments across tested subjects and grade levels, providing a broad picture of academic performance across the district.
This ranking reflects the hard work of our students, educators, school leaders, families and community partners who are committed to improving student achievement and academic growth. While we celebrate this accomplishment, JCPS remains focused on moving Forward and continuing to raise expectations and outcomes for every student.

Bus 573 and bus 567 have left our campus, but will between 30 and 60 minutes later than normal to their drop-off locations.
Bust 652 has also left campus on bus 577, and it will be delayed by approximately 45 minutes to their drop-off locations.
#JCPSDataPerformance | Johnston County Public Schools is proud to be ranked 29th out of 115 school districts in North Carolina based on its overall performance composite, placing JCPS among the top-performing districts in the state.
The district’s goal, as laid out in the Strategic Plan, is to be ranked in the top 20% in the district. The performance demonstrated by JCPS during the 2025-2026 continues a positive move in that direction.

Have a safe holiday!
I wanted to again, say thank you to all of our staff, students, and parents for helping to make this first week an a half a wonderful start to the school year. We have a few changes/updates that we want you to be aware of.
Starting next week we will be moving our carpool drop-off time back to 6:45am. Our morning carpool has been very smooth and pushing it back to 6:45am would also allow me to have more staff on duty in the cafeteria for arrival.
I wanted to make sure that you know that our daily bell schedule will be changing starting on Tuesday, September 8th. Our schedule has included a homeroom time these first 10 days, but starting on day 11 (next Tuesday) our students will go directly to 1st block when the 7:00am bell rings. We will also be introducing a WAVE time as part of our schedule that day as well.
We will also be starting a second-chance breakfast offering on Tuesday, September 9th. If students do not have a chance to get a breakfast by 7:00am, they can order a breakfast in their 1st block class between 7:00am and 7:15am. That breakfast will be delivered to their class at the beginning of their 2nd block.
Our home football game for tomorrow against Rolesville High School has been moved back to a 7pm start time due to the heat.
And finally, I wanted to remind everyone that we do not have school for students or staff on Monday, September 7th- that is the Labor Day Holiday. Enjoy your 3-day weekend!

During the July 14th regular scheduled meeting, the JC Board of Education approved revisions to Policy Code 4304: Code of Student Conduct.
There was special attention to Section F. 36, which provides governance for the "Possession, Display, Use, Sale or Distribution of Vapes".
Revisions define vapes and expresses that there will be a 10-day suspension for any student in violation of the code.
We strongly encourage parents to speak with your child(ren) regarding the details of the policy and the consequences moving forward.
Please know that the Johnston County Board of Education strives to mitigate health and safety concerns related to harmful substances such as tobacco products and/or vapes. The revised verbiage and the associated penalties have been set to achieve this goal.

Bus 62 does not have a driver for this afternoon, so that route will not run this afternoon. Please make sure you arrange a way for your student to get picked up from school today. Our carpool dismisses at 2:15pm.

Today, we welcomed the second group of kindergarteners for staggered entry and we look forward to having all of our newest students together tomorrow!
This afternoon we had some work being done near our boilers and the technician located a small gas leak coming from a propane gas line. We contacted the fire department to make sure we were still safe and we evacuated the building to err on the side of caution. Our students were outside for approximately an hour while the fire department took readings throughout our building to make sure it was safe for our students and staff. Our district had a great response and brought water for all of our students and staff. We also had emergency services on hand with ambulances to respond to individual student needs.
This is obviously not a situation that we were wanting to take place on the third day of school, but I could not be more proud of our staff, students, district, and our local emergency services with the response.
