Good evening Patriot families,
This is your Principal, Lyndsey Dunn, with your final update for the 23-24 School Year. Just a reminder that tomorrow is our last student day and it is also Early release. Students dismiss at 1:45. There is no afterschool care tomorrow so please plan accordingly. Thank you for all of the community support you have shown throughout this school year, but especially during these last two weeks. We hope that you enjoy time with your families this summer and that you read every chance that you get! We are McGee's Strong and we will see you next year!
Good evening Patriot families,
This is Lyndsey Dunn, your principal, with a few updates. Just a reminder that tomorrow, Monday, June 3rd, is field day for students in grades K, 2nd and 4th grade. Wednesday, June 5th, is field day for students in grades 1st, 3rd and 5th grade. Please send your students with a change of clothes for the water games and a towel. You may send them with a water bottle to refill. Sunscreen cannot be applied by staff; so please put it on before leaving home.
Awards are also various days this week and teachers should have communicated these dates. Let's have a great last week!
Good Evening,
This is your Principal, Ms. Lyndsey Dunn, calling with an important announcement.
The faculty and staff of McGee’s Crossroads Elementary are saddened to inform you of the passing of Ms. Alicia Weeks, a beloved teacher in our school. During this difficult time, we extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family of Ms. Weeks.
As we are a close knit school, the effects of Ms. Weeks’ death is being felt throughout our community. We will have grief counselors on campus when students return tomorrow morning. Please be sensitive to any changes in your student’s behavior. Over the next few days, encourage your student to express their feelings and listen attentively. If you are interested in connecting with mental health support, Care Solace is available as a mental health / substance use care coordination service that is available to you at https://caresolace.com/site/johnstonk12
It will be helpful to recognize the various steps we all go through in the grieving process: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Some of the common reactions that children experience when reacting to a traumatic event are:
Restlessness, nervous behavior
Trouble concentrating
Difficulty sleeping, nightmares
“Clingy” behavior, fear of being alone
Asking questions over and over again
Remembering previous losses and events
If you have any concerns about your student’s reactions to this loss, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Thank you for your concern and continued support during this difficult time.
Good evening Patriot Families,
This is your Principal, Lyndsey Dunn, with a few reminders for our fifth graders and their families. Tomorrow night, Thursday, May 30th is our graduation at McGee's Crossroads Middle School. The doors will open at 6:00 p.m. Please park in the front parking lot between the middle and elementary school. Be prepared to go through the metal detector at the middle school front door. The graduates can be dropped off at 6:20 in the cafeteria and then the families will report to the gym. If you have a fourth grade student who is serving as a junior marshall, they can be dropped off in the back lot of the middle school at 5:45. Parent volunteers can accompany them, but all other families can park in the front and wait for the doors to open. There are no tickets needed for this event. When you enter the gym, please sit close together so that everyone can have a seat. Balloons, signs, food and drink will not be allowed in the gym. Graduates and Marshalls should give all belongings to their families before entering the cafeteria. Students do not need any phones or bags with them. We look forward to this evening. Thank you.
Good evening Patriot Families,
This is your Principal, Lyndsey Dunn with some information to share. For 3rd- 5th grade parents, phone calls will start occurring next week only to students who will be given the opportunity to remediate and re-test in one or more subjects for End of Grade testing. There will not be a phone call made to all students, but a student report will be sent home with every child on Friday, May 31st.
As a reminder, Monday is a holiday and there will be no school. We will see you back on Tuesday! Have a good evening.
Good evening Patriot Families,
This is your principal, Lyndsey Dunn. As a reminder, tomorrow is the day that has been on our minds for the last few weeks - the beginning of EOG testing. I know this causes anxiety for some students, and believe it or not our teachers too. Tomorrow, Thursday, May 23rd is our Reading EOG, and Friday, May 24th is our Math EOG. All year, Your teachers have tried to prepare you. We’ve done months of test-taking practice and discussed study skills. You’ve all worked so hard this year, but this test only offers a glimpse of everything you’ve learned with your teacher. The test can show people how well you comprehend fictional and informational text. It can show people how well you can interpret poetry, write a paragraph and use reasoning. It can show people your amazing math skills. But what it can’t show people - is how kind, compassionate and caring you are. It can’t show people how hard you’ve worked and how brave you are for just showing up and trying. So the best thing you can do is get a good night's rest, wake up and wear the outfit that makes you feel confident (school appropriate of course), fix your hair, eat your breakfast and come to school on time. Once you are here - take your time, use your strategies you’ve learned all year long and show everyone what you know and what you can do. If you give 100%, all anyone can be is just proud of you. Parents, please allow your students sufficient time to complete their testing and refrain from picking up your students Thursday or Friday until 1:30 pm. They cannot be pulled from an active test session. School will be closed on Monday, May 27th in honor of memorial day. All EOG score reports will be sent home with students on Friday, May 31st. I believe in you and you are more than a test score. Have a good evening students.
Good evening Patriot families,
This is Mrs. Dunn, Your principal, calling with some information for the rest of the year. Please forgive the length of this call, but there are some dates that I wanted to make you aware of.
Monday, May 13th is the last day to turn in your Quarter 4 Principal Book Club Reading Logs. The Principal Book club party will be held on Friday, May 17th where they will receive Ice Cream Sundaes! If your child has qualified for the Principal Book Club Party all four quarters, they will also receive their t-shirt that day. I am so proud of everyone that participated in this program and the amount of reading it encouraged our students to do!
It is that time of year for End of Grade testing to occur for our 3rd-5th grade students. The Reading EOG will be given on Thursday, May 23rd. The Math EOG will be given on Friday, May 24th and the Science EOG will only be given to fifth graders on Wednesday, May 29th. Please do all that you can to ensure that your students are present in school and on time for these dates so that they do not have to make-up these tests in a separate session.
End of the Year Award Dates and Field Day Dates were shared on our social media pages today. They will also be posted on our website. Please check them out for specific times, dates and locations. 5th Grade Graduation will occur on Thursday, May 30th at McGee’s Crossroads Middle School Gym this year so that all students can be together for the ceremony. Students can be dropped off between 6:00-6:20 pm and the procession will be promptly at 6:30 pm. A letter will be sent home with fifth grade students with more information. Pre-K Graduation will be held on on Friday, May 31st at 10:30 in the cafeteria. More information will be sent home by Mrs. Cooper.
If you have a rising Kindergarten, don’t forget to get those students registered. We will be hosting a Popsicles on the Playground event on June 4th from 5:30 - 6:30 pm for our future Kindergarten students and their families. You can meet the teachers, tour the school and get more information about the upcoming year.
Thank you for all that you do! Have a good evening.
