Johnston County Public Schools hosted its 31st annual Flame For Learning Awards celebration this evening, naming William Marshall as the 2025 Teacher of the Year! Marshall, a teacher and alumnus of West Johnston Wildcats, was one of four finalists, which included Heather Bryant of Clayton High School, Lois D'Agostino of West View Elementary, and Brooke Hayward of Riverwood Elementary School. Due to the hazardous road conditions caused by the recent winter weather event, Johnston County Public Schools will be closed for all students tomorrow, Friday, January 24, 2025, as well as all extracurricular activities. The district will operate under Condition 3 of the inclement weather plan. For JCPS staff, this day will become an optional teacher workday. Schools and county offices will open at 10 AM. As always, safety is our primary concern and after driving our roadways and receiving guidance from local safety officials and NCDOT, we have been advised that though the main roads within high-traffic areas may be clear, many secondary roads within the rural areas of the county are expected to still have hazardous conditions through Friday, making them unsafe for JCPS transportation use. In addition, many of our campuses have shaded walkways, parking lots, and areas that must continue to be assessed by our operational staff before students may safely return. Extracurricular activities and community facility use will resume on Saturday morning, however, we still encourage site visitors to travel safely and be cautious while on campus, particularly in shaded areas. “Mathletes” from 13 JCPS middle schools, which included 121 students, participated in the JCPS MathCounts competition. There were individual and team events. Teams were comprised of four students, representing 13 varsity teams and 12 junior varsity teams. Sam McLeod of Innovation Academy was the overall individual academy, followed by Aiden Ernst of North Johnston, and third place went to Edgar Cordon Juarez of McGee's Crossroads Elementary. Sophia Zenobi of North Johnston Middle earned first place in the Most Questions Answered Correctly in the Countdown Round Competition category. In the team competition, North Johnston Middle took home 1st place, Innovation Academy came in second, and Princeton Middle/High rounded out the top three. Innovation Academy Principal Mrs. Elizabeth Patton is the next incredible educator we are recognizing for #NationalPrincipalsMonth! Mrs. Patton began her career with Johnston County Public Schools at Clayton Middle. As an educator, she has served as a middle school teacher, high school assistant principal, and central office administrator. After spending seven years in the high school world, Mrs. Patton was excited to return to middle school and is honored to serve as the principal of Innovation Academy. 🤩
