    • Junior Solar Sprint Competition

      Junior Solar Sprint (JSS) is an educational program for 5th through 8th grade students with the goal of creating the fastest, most interesting, and best crafted solar-vehicle possible. George Brewer, Darren Morrison, and Luke Jenkins have been building a car for several months. They competed at the eastern regional competition at Lenoir community college in Kinston. Although they had an innovative design they were not able to progress to the state competition.

    • Science Olympiad Team competes at Campbell University

      The Smithfield Middle Science Olympiad Team competed at Campbell University on Saturday, February 17th and placed 14th out of 24. The team earned the following awards: 1st Place in Dynamic Planet and Meteorology-Jason Lopez and Ashley Hernandez. 2nd Place in Microbe Mission- Ashley Belleza Franco and Michelle Chen. 4th Place in Disease Detectives-Jenny Yang and Michelle Chen. 5th Place in Write It, Do It- Michelle Chen and Ashley Belleza Franco. 5th Place in Fast Facts-Jenny Yang and Maria Urena. 8th Place in Road Scholar - Ashley Belleza Franco and Cassandra Melendez.

    • Johnston County Water and Soil Conservation Power Point Contest

      As a project for Ms. Carter's Class, her students made and presented a power point titled "Water Cycle - The Cycle of Life" to the class. As a result of their excellent work two students were chosen to enter a contest for the Water and Soil Conservation District for Johnston County. Both of the students won an award and received an opportunity to be recognized at a Banquet on Friday, February 2, 2018. They were also given a monetary gift. Our two winners left to right were: Ahilin Guzman - 3rd place and Kiara Morales-Aquino - 2nd place.

    • Mariah Williams is the Recipient of the Victor E. Bell, Jr. Scholarship.

      Commitment, excellence and leadership has paid off for Mariah Williams, the AVID College Readiness recipient of the Victor E. Bell, Jr. Scholarship. The Victor E. Bell, Jr. Scholarship awards $20,000 to select seventh graders with high potential to pursue a college degree in an area of the student's choice.

    • Envirothon Competition

      ​Ms Carter and Ms Harper took 8 students from the Envirothon team to Raleigh on Saturday, Feb 3 for a competition review in the areas of Wildlife and Soil. This competition is open to middle and high school students and encompasses the following areas: Soil, Forestry, Wildlife, Aquatics, and Environmental Issues. The Envirothon competition will be held on Mar 22 at Durham Soil and Water Conservation building.
