During the July 14th regular scheduled meeting, the JC Board of Education approved revisions to Policy Code 4304: Code of Student Conduct.
There was special attention to Section F. 36, which provides governance for the "Possession, Display, Use, Sale or Distribution of Vapes".
Revisions define vapes and expresses that there will be a 10-day suspension for any student in violation of the code.
We strongly encourage parents to speak with your child(ren) regarding the details of the policy and the consequences moving forward.
Please know that the Johnston County Board of Education strives to mitigate health and safety concerns related to harmful substances such as tobacco products and/or vapes. The revised verbiage and the associated penalties have been set to achieve this goal.

Over the course of 8 weeks, more than 270,000 meals were prepared and provided, making a meaningful impact on the children and families throughout Johnston County.

Good afternoon, Eagle Families,
I would like to share some important information with you regarding the 2026-2027 school year. First, I am excited that I have been named the new principal at West Smithfield Elementary. From the moment I began as the Assistant Principal in 2022, I knew this was a special school. The staff, students, and families are second to none. Together, our students have accomplished so much, and I look forward to seeing what the upcoming school year will bring.
Our first school event will be “Pickleball and Popsicles with the Principal” on August 8th from 4:00-6:00 at the Smithfield Aquatic and Recreation Center. All equipment will be provided, and you don’t have to know anything about pickleball to play. It is an amazing game for all ages, so please join me for lots of fun games and a refreshing treat.
Next, we will have our “Meet the Teacher Night” for all 1st-5th grade students on August 20th from 4:30-6:30. Kindergarten Open House will be determined at a later date. Please plan to join us in the cafeteria for a short informational meeting before going to classrooms, where you will have a chance to meet our amazing new Assistant Principal, Dr. Wynn.
We are also looking for parents, grandparents, and/or guardians to join our Parent Advisory Council. Council members assist the principal in making decisions that promote positive change for the school commmunity. We meet four times a year or once per quarter, and there will always be a virtual option to attend. If you are interested please complete the following form and submit a letter of interest and resume to me at carmenbarnes@johnston.k12.nc.us.
Lastly, I would like to share the supply lists to help you prepare for the first day of school on August 24th. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!

As we prepare for the 2026-2027 school year, on Monday, July 27th and Tuesday, July 28th, JCPS Information Services, Transportation and Student Services departments will be hosting a Summer Information Fair at three locations: Cleveland High, Corinth-Holders High, and Smithfield-Selma High.
Families can visit any of these three campuses from 12:00 PM-6:00 PM to complete new enrollment applications, receive status updates on existing enrollment applications, and collect required enrollment documentation. Parents will be able to receive information on how transportation is provided, request transportation if they did not use it the previous year, or discuss any summer address changes that impact transportation. Student Services will also be available to provide student resources.

Attention West Smithfield Families! Día de la Ciencia y la Cultura, a bilingual celebration of Science, Art, Culture, and Community will be held on August 1st at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh. Visitors will enjoy numerous activities celebrating the Hispanic culture. This event is completely free, and you may even see some friends and staff members of WSE.
