Johnston County Public Schools is committed to providing quality education to its students and professional learning environments for its staff, free of distractions, and supporting high-quality teaching and learning, enhancing student well-being, and maintaining a safe and focused school environment.
Recent studies indicate that cell phone use, particularly for social media and interaction, can interfere with students' ability to focus on learning and negatively impact students in many ways. Excessive use of cell phones and social media has been linked to lower academic performance, increased behavioral issues, and other conditions that hinder students' ability to excel.
In recent legislation, House Bill 959, Session Law 2025-38, revisions were made addressing clear guidelines for the use of cell phones to include educational purposes. The Johnston County Board of Education has adopted Policy Code: 4318 Use of Wireless Communication Devices.
Families are strongly encouraged to review the policy in its entirety.

Corinth-Holders Elementary's Melissa Waring has been named the Johnston County Public Schools 2025 Media Specialist Employee of the Year. 🎉
Waring’s initiatives and fresh ideas have been instrumental in the success of the media center at CHES. One of Waring’s initiatives was to offer open circulation time each morning, where students may visit the media center before the final bell rings. The initiative has been an incredible success, and now, on any given day, between 40 and 50 students stop in before going to class.

📢It has been reported that JCPS students have received more than 66.2 million in scholarship offerings for the 2024-2025 school year! This is an amazing 18 million more than scholarship offerings received during the 2023-2024 year!📢
A great deal of the offerings have been accepted and will cover tuition costs as these students continue their educational journeys!
💲JCPS is proud of the efforts that go into securing scholarship funding, and we celebrate the students, staff, and parents who work hard to make it happen! 💲
Great things are truly happening in JCPS!

North Carolina is home to a large population of active duty, guard, reserve, and veteran armed services members, and the state’s public schools reflect that.
In 2019, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction launched the Purple Star Award Designation initiative to recognize the state’s strong military presence and support for military families.
The Purple Star designation is awarded to schools that demonstrate military-friendly practices and a commitment to military students and families. JCPS had 17 schools receive the Purple Star Award Designation. They are as follows:
Benson Middle
Clayton High School
Cleveland High School
Corinth-Holders Elementary
Corinth-Holders High
Four Oaks Elementary
Meadow School
McGee's Crossroads Elementary
Polenta Elementary
Princeton Elementary
Princeton Middle/High
Smithfield-Selma High
South Johnston High School
South Smithfield Elementary
Swift Creek Middle School
West Johnston High School
Thanksgiving Elementary
We are proud of these designations and honored to recognize our military families in this way!

We are pleased to announce that after end of year awards, we will have a buy one get one free book fair here at school. This is NOT a fundraiser for us at all, but a way for you to get books for your students to have during the summer. Students who engage in summer reading experience better academic outcomes. Also the library here at CHES will be open select Wednesdays in the summer. More to follow. If you have any questions or want suggestions on summer reading please email me at
