On Thursday, January 30, 2025, Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS) hosted its Fall Special Recognition Celebration at West Johnston High.
Students and staff were recognized for academic, athletic, extracurricular, and extraordinary achievements. Parents, families, JCPS leadership, and Johnston County Board of Education members attended the celebration.

On January 30, 2025, members of our JCPS Elementary ELA and MTSS Teams presented at the North Central Regional Meeting for NCDPI Office of Early Learning.
The topic of the presentation was our Individual Reading Plan Protocol which provides an intentional plan for teachers to provide additional reading support for our youngest students. The collaboration of the members of these teams helps us keep our processes and procedures consistent and intentional as we aim to help all students grow and achieve.

Mrs. Angela Betterton is the JCPS Certified Employee of the Month for January 2025!
Betterton is an Exceptional Children’s teacher at Thanksgiving Elementary School and has been with Johnston County Public Schools since 2000. In those 25 years, she has also been a curriculum coach and an after-school coordinator.
She provides exemplary leadership and guidance to colleagues, ensuring the implementation of best practices in teaching and classroom management.
As part of her recognition, Mrs. Betterton answered a few questions about her career, and how she builds relationships with her students.

The JCPS Calendar Committee has been hard at work developing options for our school calendar for the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 school years, and we are excited to share three sample calendars for your review. Your voice is a critical part of this process, and we invite you to provide your feedback to help guide our final decision.
We have created a brief Google Form where you can review the three sample calendars, vote for your favorite option, and share additional feedback about each calendar.

The feedback form will remain open until 12 PM on Friday, January 31. We encourage every member of our community—parents, students, staff, and stakeholders—to participate. Your input will ensure that the final calendar reflects the needs and preferences of our community.

Due to the hazardous road conditions caused by the recent winter weather event, Johnston County Public Schools will be closed for all students tomorrow, Friday, January 24, 2025, as well as all extracurricular activities. The district will operate under Condition 3 of the inclement weather plan.
For JCPS staff, this day will become an optional teacher workday. Schools and county offices will open at 10 AM.
As always, safety is our primary concern and after driving our roadways and receiving guidance from local safety officials and NCDOT, we have been advised that though the main roads within high-traffic areas may be clear, many secondary roads within the rural areas of the county are expected to still have hazardous conditions through Friday, making them unsafe for JCPS transportation use. In addition, many of our campuses have shaded walkways, parking lots, and areas that must continue to be assessed by our operational staff before students may safely return.
Extracurricular activities and community facility use will resume on Saturday morning, however, we still encourage site visitors to travel safely and be cautious while on campus, particularly in shaded areas.

Due to the updated inclement weather forecast, all JCPS schools and campuses will be dismissed 1 hour early on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. All afterschool activities and events are canceled as well. We hope everyone remains safe and warm during this storm event!

All staff should remain off campus tomorrow. Essential 12-month employees will receive additional information from their immediate supervisor.

Mrs. Yennifer Diaz was named JCPS Classified Employee of the Month for December 2024!🌟
As the interpreter at North Johnston High School, Mrs. Diaz is an immediate link for Spanish-speaking students and their families. Some students will ask to speak with her directly if they have a problem. Born in Guatemala, she came to the United States at an early age, and now she and her husband have two children.
Her co-workers say that Mrs. Diaz communicates professionally, effectively, and impartially with staff, administrators, students, and families.

Arianna Rubio-De Casa is our final and fabulous Character Education Award recipient for January 2025!😎
She is a fifth-grader at Thanksgiving Elementary School, where her attitude and behavior within the school and the classroom always exudes respect for her teachers and classmates.
She treats everyone with a kind spirit and is always willing to help others. Ariana sets a wonderful example of what it means to be a Buffalo and the ROAM expectations: be Respectful, Offer kindness, Act responsibly, and Make a positive difference.
