Wilson’s Mills High is proud to announce that Bradley Betterton has been selected as the first athletic director for the Green Waves. Betterton has served as the athletic director and coach at Archer Lodge Middle for more than 15 years.
In 2024, Betterton was named a recipient of the inaugural Middle School Athletic Director of Excellence Award by the North Carolina Athletic Directors Association (NCADA) for his significant contributions to the middle school athletic administration in North Carolina.
“I’m so excited to see Mr. Betterton become the first athletic director of Wilson’s Mills High. He is a servant leader with a heart for kids and a passion for athletics. His years of experience as an athletic director and coach will ensure that the Green Waves build a culture of fairness and excellence on and off the field,” Matt Johnson, Archer Lodge Middle Principal.
Throughout his tenure with JCPS, Betterton has also served at other school locations near the Wilson’s Mills community. This includes four years at Corinth Holders School as a teacher and coach when it was a K-8 school, one year as an assistant principal at Glendale-Kenly Elementary, and one year as athletic director and coach at Smithfield Middle.
He has built a strong reputation for leadership, integrity, and a commitment to student-athletes. Betterton brings a passion for athletics as an extension of the classroom, emphasizing character, accountability, and excellence both on and off the field. His leadership will help shape traditions, expectations, and opportunities that will impact student-athletes for years to come.
As Wilson’s Mills High prepares to open its doors in Fall 2026, Betterton will play a vital role in establishing and developing the school’s athletic programs. His more than 20 years of experience in scholastic-based athletic program building, team development, coaching, and fostering positive school culture will be instrumental during this foundational phase.
“Bradley’s leadership skills, focus on scholastic-based athletics, community knowledge, and work ethic make him a great fit for all of the future Green Waves students. JCPS athletics is excited to prepare for this upcoming school year alongside principal Chad Jewett and athletic director Betterton,” JCPS District Athletic Director Josh Plisko said.
