Congratulations to Mrs. Shelby Lane, our May 2025 Classified Employee of the Month!
Mrs. Lane is the Secretary/Data Manager at Johnston County Virtual Academy (JCVA) and is a dedicated employee who loves with her whole heart. In everything she does, the students' success is at the forefront of her mind. When a new student enrolls in Virtual Academy, Mrs. Lane quickly establishes positive relationships with all of the parents and students, sharing strategies for them to be successful in their learning environment. Students often ask to work in her office as they make up assignments or as an area to focus on their tasks without distractions.
Mrs. Lane is a product of Johnston County Public Schools, and proudly supports and fosters the flame for learning for all future generations. She has worked with all grade levels over the past 11 years, and looks forward to continuing her journey with the school district as the county continues to grow.
The staff at Virtual Academy value her many talents and her depth of knowledge on all topics. She is a pleasure to work with on a daily basis. "I would not be where I am today without the support of family, friends, and all the teachers and administrators that poured compassion and the love of learning into me as a student," Mrs. Lane said.
How does being named Classified Employee of the Month make you feel?
It is an honor to be named Classified Employee of the Month. I know there are great things happening within all of Johnston County Public Schools, and I am happy to be just a small part of that.
How does your job affect the children’s overall school experience?
While I have a specific job role and description, I wear many hats in a support role for the Johnston County Virtual Academy. The students and families of JCVA know that if they need anything at all, they can call the school or email me directly and I will work to help them.
Why is it important to build relationships with students and staff? How do you do that?
It is important to build relationships with students and staff because those positive relationships lead to improved academic outcomes, enhanced student well-being, and a more supportive and collaborative workplace for educators. Strong relationships between students, their families, and staff contribute to a more positive and inclusive school environment where students feel safe, valued, and supported.
All of these benefits can be experienced through open communication and displays of empathy for others. You never know the struggles of the person on the other end of an email or phone call, and it is important to be an active listener and be receptive to their needs.
Why is collaboration and teamwork with the school’s administration, staff, and co-workers important?
Collaboration and teamwork with the school’s administration, staff, and co-workers are essential to the daily success of the school. A school only functions as a positive environment when all staff are working together cohesively and pitching in where help is needed. In a support role, there is no such thing as "that is not my job"! One must be open and willing to do whatever it takes for the student’s, their families, and the school to reach its peak potential.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The one aspect of my job that I enjoy the most is being the first line of communication. Whether someone calls the school inquiring about enrollment or what a typical day looks like for a virtual student, or if they come to the office in person, I am usually the first person they speak with.
What would you say to those thinking about joining the JCPS team?
Joining the JCPS team means becoming a part of a community that is committed to making a difference in the lives of students everyday. "Join the JCPS team and work alongside educators and staff who support one another and believe in public education," Mrs. Lane said.
