Mr. Stephen Baker, Principal

Welcome to Selma Middle School! I’m Stephen Baker, and this marks my seventh year as part of the Railblazer family. As a son of the Selma community—my mom is from here—I am proud to serve you and your students, working to ensure they are learning at the highest levels.

Here at Selma Middle, we Railblazers are known for our hard work, dedication, and problem-solving. Our ultimate goal is to help students take responsibility for their learning, while we as a school remain committed to doing whatever it takes to foster both academic and social growth.

Each new school year is filled with potential and hope, and we are eager to partner with you—the parents and guardians—as we teach, guide, and encourage your children. Together, we’ll prepare them for success in an ever-changing world.

I look forward to thriving alongside you this year!

Mrs. LaTia Deravil, Assistant Principal

I am proud to serve as the Assistant Principal here at Selma Middle School. This will be my 6th year serving the students and families at Selma Middle. I grew up in Tampa, Florida, and moved to Johnston County in 2018 with my husband and four children. This is my 3rd year serving as an administrator; prior to being an administrator here, I served as one of the multi-classroom leaders (MCL) and MTSS Lead here at Selma Middle for 3 years.

Before coming to Selma Middle, I served as a high school math teacher, middle school science teacher, and director of a preschool in Hillsborough County, Florida. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Florida State University; and later, completed my Master's Degree in Teaching and Learning with a concentration in Leadership from Liberty University, and later I added my Certificate in School Administration at Appalachian State University.

I am ecstatic to not only continue to positively impact education by building strong relationships, increasing student morale, engagement, and creating a safe school environment where students can thrive as they work towards being their greatest selves; I am also grateful to have the opportunity to with with the teachers here and focus on the teaching and learning happening in the building as the Assistant Principal over instruction (API). I genuinely believe that hard word, dedication, and problem-solving is needed by teachers and students alike in order to prepare students for success in an ever-changing world. Thank you for allowing me to serve you and the great community of Selma.

Sabrina Penuel

Mrs. Sabrina Penuel Assistant Principal

I am thrilled to continue serving as Assistant Principal at Selma Middle School. In my six months here, I have truly fallen in love with the Selma community and the incredible students and staff who make our school so special. The teachers at Selma Middle are exceptionally talented and bring an inspiring passion to their work each day, creating a learning environment where students are encouraged, supported, and challenged to do their very best. Our administrative team works together seamlessly—like we have known each other forever—which makes our leadership strong, unified, and fully focused on supporting students and staff.

With 22 years of experience in education, I have had the privilege of serving in a variety of roles, including assistant principal, behavior support teacher, intervention coordinator, and special education teacher. These experiences have given me a well-rounded understanding of how to support students academically, socially, and emotionally. I am deeply committed to building strong partnerships with families, using data to guide instruction, and fostering an inclusive school culture where every student feels valued and capable of success.

One of my greatest joys as an educator is collaborating with teachers and staff to develop innovative strategies that empower students and celebrate their achievements. At Selma Middle, we live out our theme—Learn More, Do More, Be More!—by challenging ourselves to grow, seek new opportunities, and reach higher every day. I am dedicated to using my leadership skills, passion for student success, and commitment to excellence to help our school community bring that theme to life in everything we do.

On a personal note, I have been happily married to my husband, Mike Penuel, for 18 years. We have two wonderful children—Lana, who is in 6th grade, and Ethan, who is in 10th grade—and two beloved dogs, Libby and Bowie. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and relaxing at my favorite place, the beach.

I look forward to building on the relationships we’ve formed, celebrating our students’ successes, and working alongside the Selma Middle team to Learn More, Do More, and Be More together this school year.
