With over 20 years of educational experience, Mr. Allen is excited to serve as our Principal at North Johnston High School. Mr. Allen served as a teacher (five years), assistant principal (five years) and principal (six years) at Smithfield-Selma High School. Under his leadership, the school grew in academics, size, and program offerings to students. Mr. Allen spent two years at the district level facilitating the development of the district's 2029 Strategic Plan and serving in Human Resources as a hiring director. Mr. Allen realized his true passion is to serve students, teachers and families at the school level.

Mr. Allen graduated from Mount Olive College (now University of Mount Olive) with a BA in Religion in 2000. He went on to receive his teaching license in 2004, his National Board Teacher Certification in 2008 and his Masters in School Administration from East Carolina University in 2013.

Mr. Allen is passionate about staff and student success and believes community involvement makes a good school a great school. We welcome your support for our school. Outside of school, Mr. Allen has two sons, ages 18 and 14 and he has been married to his lifelong sweetheart Maria, for over 25 years. In his spare time, Mr. Allen is also a bi-vocational pastor and enjoys reruns of The Andy Griffith Show and the Food Network.

Mr. Chartrand graduated from Barton College and NC State University with a Bachelor's in Education and a Masters of School Administration. He taught at Zebulon Elementary and Eastway Elementary for 12 years before becoming a Panther! He has been an Assistant Principal at North Johnston High School for four years. He is also our Testing Coordinator. Mr. Chartrand is originally from a town near Detroit, Michigan. He loves spending time outside of school being active with his wife and 2 boys.

Mr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Science from NC State and teaching credentials from East Carolina. He taught 7th-grade science for 7 years in Smithfield and Washington D.C. In 2019, he completed a Master of Education in Education Policy and Leadership from American University, and returned to Smithfield, becoming the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program Coordinator at Smithfield-Selma High School. Mr. Smith joined the Panthers as Assistant Principal in 2024. Mr. Smith has spent much of his career as a wrestling coach at both the middle school and high school levels.

Emily Shelton earned her undergraduate degree from Barton College, where she double majored in Communication and Political Science. She also holds a Graduate Certificate in Middle and Secondary Education from Appalachian State University. She is deeply committed to the belief that every student can learn and strives to create engaging, meaningful educational experiences for all. Emily’s career in education began with an Early Childhood Certificate from Wake Tech, followed by roles as a Teacher Assistant in Johnston County, working with Pre-K and Kindergarten students. She then transitioned into a lateral entry teaching position at Selma Middle School, where she taught project-based engineering. Over her 10-year tenure at Selma Middle, she taught Engineering, Social Studies, Science, and Math, bringing an interdisciplinary approach to her teaching. Beyond the classroom, Emily has been a leader at Selma Middle School, serving as Department Chair, Subcommittee Chair, and School Improvement Team Chair. She has led multiple digital learning professional development sessions and chaired the committee that secured Selma Middle’s designation as a National Schools to Watch institution. She also wrote and directed Selma Middle’s first student play, started the school’s Lego League, and led the Go MAD (Make A Difference) Club. Additionally, she has expanded STEM education opportunities by leading a cybersecurity summer course for teens. Emily is completing her Principal Residency at North Johnston High School for the 26-27 school year.
