Substitute Information

Johnston County Public Schools would like to thank you for your interest in becoming a substitute teacher with our school system.

Qualifying applicants for substitute teaching in JCPS:

  • Individuals who hold or have held a clear North Carolina Teaching License

  • Individuals who have previously been employed in permanent positions with Johnston County Public Schools

  • Individuals completing their student teaching in North Carolina

  • Individuals with at least a high school diploma

Pay Rates and Requirements

Certified Substitute – $149/day

  • Requires a current or expired clear North Carolina teaching license

  • Upload a copy of your license with your application

Non Certified Substitute – $129/day

Substitute Application

To apply, follow the steps in the Application Process section below.

  1. Complete Effective Teacher Training if necessary. You may complete the Effective Teacher Training program at Johnston Community College ($75), another local community college, or online via App-Garden University ($29).

  2. Register as a Level 1 Volunteer on the MyVolunteer system before completing the required volunteer hours in a JCPS classroom. To ensure the safety of our students, all level 1 volunteers must be approved by the school principal. A total of 18 volunteer hours must be completed at one school and be signed off by the principal on the JCPS Volunteer Hours Verification Form. Volunteer hours cannot be completed in the candidate’s child or relative’s classroom. 

**Volunteer Hour Requirement waived for Former JCPS employees**

  1. Complete the Employment Application.

  2. Provide a minimum of 3 professional references, with 1 reference being your current or most recent supervisor. Former employees should list their current supervisor and their last JCPS principal. Be sure to give complete and accurate contact information, including email addresses. References from friends, neighbors, and family members are not acceptable.

  3. Upload the required application attachments:  

    1. High School Diploma, Transcripts or GED Certificate

    2. Effective Teacher Training Certificate or Teaching License 

    3. JCPS Volunteer Hours Verification Form 

  4. If you have questions about completing the application, please call Applicant Tracking at 1-877-974-7437.

  5. We will review your application, check references, and conduct a criminal background check.

  6. Once approved, you will be invited to New Substitute Teacher Onboarding.

  7. Upon completion of onboarding and submission of required forms, new substitute teachers will claim their JCPS ID account, which will allow access to various technology systems and the absence management program, Red Rover, and begin substitute teaching.
