Middle School Curriculum
The Johnston County Public Schools Middle School instructional program is based on the North Carolina Course of Study. The program provides our students with rigorous coursework and a variety of extracurricular activities that prepare our students for college and career. Middle school students study English/Language Arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and healthful living. The middle school program also offers a variety of electives, such as, Art, Music, Band, and Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses. Each middle school offers a program of electives available to students. Our middle school students also have opportunities to be involved in extracurricular activities, clubs, and organizations, such as, county-wide Spelling Bee, MathCounts, Science Olympiad, and Battle of the Books.
Our middle schools are organized into interdisciplinary teacher teams in which two to five teachers assume joint responsibility for the instructional program of a given group of students. This organization offers advantages for students, and teachers while allowing parents to meet with their child's individual teacher or with the team. As a team, teachers are able to address both academic and social needs of their students while our middle school students make the transition from elementary school to high school.
