Congratulations to Scott Stanley, our Classified Employee of the Month for September!
Stanley's 26-year career with JCPS began as a custodian at Princeton School before becoming the head custodian at South Smithfield Elementary. For the past 23 years, he has served in the General Services Department and has proudly held the role of foreman for nearly four years.
Stanley leads with unparalleled dedication, an unmatched work ethic, and a true servant’s heart. He is a driving force within the Facility Services team, continually adapting to meet the changing needs of the district.
No matter how big, small, or unexpected the task, Stanley and his team are always the first to jump in and get the job done. What truly sets him apart is his incredible attitude. Anytime Stanley is thanked for his hard work, his genuine smile and familiar response are always the same: “My pleasure.”
Stanley's dedication to the success of students and staff is evident in everything he does. His willingness to go above and beyond to support others makes Stanley an invaluable member of the Johnston County Public Schools family.
He is happily married to his wife, Emily, who are proud parents of four children: Jordan, Dale, Kayley, and Ava.
What was your reaction when you learned you had been named JCPS Classified Employee of the Month?
I felt immensely grateful to receive this honor! General Services consistently works hard behind the scenes to support our schools, and this recognition is a testament to the dedication of my entire team. They deserve the credit, and I am proud to share this recognition with them.
What brought you to Johnston County Public Schools, and what keeps you passionate about the work you do?
I joined JCPS at age 21, initially viewing it simply as a job. However, after transitioning to Facility Services, I witnessed firsthand my colleagues' shared commitment to maintaining safe, welcoming environments for our students and staff. That passion inspired me to build a lifelong career dedicated to serving our school district.
What is one thing your role has taught you that you will carry with you throughout your career?
Early in my career, my former foreman demonstrated the value of leading by example. That experience taught me that being a foreman means being a leader rather than a boss. I never ask my team to perform a task I wouldn't undertake myself, and working alongside them in the field remains a core principle of my leadership approach.
How do you believe your work contributes to creating a positive experience for students and staff?
While individual efforts are important, our collective impact as a department is what drives success. Together, we supply custodial staff with essential materials, provide furniture for classrooms and offices, and coordinate logistical setups for major district initiatives. Assisting with events like Veterans Day is particularly rewarding, as seeing the final setup brings immense pride to our team.
What do meaningful relationships with students, staff, families, or colleagues mean to you, and how do you build those connections
Building strong relationships across the district is vital to our mission. I approach my work with a service-oriented mindset, aiming to be supportive, accommodating, and reliable. By consistently delivering dependable support, authentic connections naturally develop over time.
What is one moment in your career at JCPS that you will always remember? What made it meaningful to you?
Navigating the COVID-19 pandemic stands out as a defining chapter in my career. Despite unprecedented challenges, our team demonstrated remarkable crisis management and resilience.
Behind the scenes, we mobilized to distribute protective equipment and organized daily, comprehensive sanitization in every classroom at every school every day to prepare for the safe return of students and staff the following day.
Witnessing our team's extraordinary commitment during that crisis remains one of my proudest professional achievements.
