How does being named Classified Employee of the Month make you feel?

I'm excited to receive this award, and I feel seen in this moment! It shows that a strong work ethic and treating people with kindness and respect go a long way.

What led you to choose your role at JCPS?

Working in the school district plays an important role in the community. Being someone who has volunteered in the community, I find it rewarding to contribute to an environment that helps our students succeed.

Also, becoming the bookkeeper and head secretary at Johnston County Early College Academy was an opportunity where I could utilize my financial and administrative skills to support our students and staff.

What have you learned or gained from working in this profession, and how would you like to grow in your role after receiving this recognition?

This role has taught me that adaptability, communication, and organization are essential elements of an ever-changing and unpredictable environment. It has motivated me to continue expanding my knowledge and growing professionally.

How do you create an environment where students feel supported and able to succeed?

I help create an environment where students feel supported by ensuring our front office is welcoming for the students, staff, and parents. Whether it's access to resources or assistance that is needed, I am always willing to lend a helping hand.

Why are student and staff relationships important to you, and how do you build them?

I build trust and confidence with students, staff, and families by being approachable, listening, and treating everyone with kindness and respect. Positive connections also play a vital role in a successful school environment, so I greet every child and parent, listen to their concerns, and provide assistance whenever possible. Additionally, these relationships are built through professionalism and dependability in my roles at Johnston County Early College Academy.

Describe a memorable experience that had a lasting impact on you. What made it special, and what did you learn from it?

A memorable experience was when I helped a student navigate a stressful situation. The student was overwhelmed, and I listened attentively and with empathy.

Through active listening, I was able to point that student in the direction of the staff member who could help them. There was a positive outcome, and the student became more confident and began thriving in the school environment.

From that experience, I learned that a smile and a listening ear go a long way. Life is hard, and we should be there for one another for support and encouragement.
