YLA

Seven outstanding student delegates from Johnston County Career and Technical Leadership Academy—Yazmin Guerra Mendoza, Hannah Hagie, Victoria Ferrer, Caleb Nease, Katelyn Beal, Anaiah McKoy, and Savanna Walls—proudly represented our county, school, and community college at the 55th anniversary of the North Carolina Youth Legislative Assembly (YLA) this past weekend.

According to the event’s website, "Youth Legislative Assembly (YLA) is a mock legislative session where high school students voice their opinions and vote on issues concerning local, state, and national government."

Throughout the event, our students engaged in passionate debates, collaborated on policy proposals, and demonstrated exceptional leadership among 216 students from across the state. Their ability to think critically, engage in meaningful discussions, and advocate for important issues set them apart.

Their advisor, Mrs. Eugenia Ijames, expressed her pride, stating, "I was so proud of them. They were leaders and stood out among 216 students from all over the state." Their dedication, hard work, and passion for civic engagement highlight the strength of CTLA’s students and their commitment to making a difference in their communities.

For our freshman delegates, this was an eye-opening experience. Witnessing the impact they could have through policy discussions, they are now eager to apply for leadership positions next year to contribute even more.  Reflecting on the experience, Caleb Nease, a freshman in CTLA’s Paralegal pathway, shared, "Overall, every committee was great, but for hype and excitement, Military Affairs took the cake."

Beyond the rigorous debates, students also had the opportunity to unwind and bond with their peers through games and lively dances, strengthening their connections within their respective committees.

CTLA is incredibly proud of these young leaders and their accomplishments. This experience has undoubtedly prepared them for future success, and we can’t wait to see all the amazing things they will achieve!  A special thank you to Ms. Gallion, the creator of the program, and the JCC alumni who continue to inspire the next generation of leaders.
