Harlem Wizards Game

The Harlem Wizards wowed the sold-out crowd at Smithfield-Selma High with their interactive family show, featuring incredible ball-handling, jaw-dropping trick shots, and high-flying dunks. The JoCo All-Stars, made up of Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS) principals, teachers, coaches, and support staff, stepped onto the court for some friendly competition, school spirit, and lots of laughs. Audience members were also called up to participate in the show’s shenanigans. The Wizards kept the crowd going with lots of dunks, dancing, and dazzling demonstrations of skill.

The night’s biggest crowd pleaser was watching the children play a host of games like “red light, green light” to win various prizes. The overjoyed young people were able to interact with Wizards’ players, whom they literally looked up to. The show’s finale was a massive dance party with all the children gathered on the gymnasium floor, jumping and spinning as the team made their exit.

The Harlem Wizards are a nationally renowned basketball entertainment team that blends athletic talent with comedy and crowd engagement. It was an electrifying experience that delighted the audience of all ages while promoting positive messages about teamwork, education, and community.

Darrick McNeill, Principal of West Smithfield Elementary, was one of five JCPS principals to participate in the on-court action. While his skillful play was noted, his biggest contribution was likely his role in promoting the event and convincing students and parents to attend. “We are fortunate to live in a community that not only recognizes the importance of high-quality education but also actively supports our school system in many ways.”

The event was spearheaded by the Johnston County Education Foundation (JCEF), which plays a vital role in supporting the school district by investing directly in JCPS educators and classrooms. “Last night’s sold-out Harlem Wizards event was a powerful example of what’s possible when our schools and community come together,” stated Amy Burton, JCEF Executive Director. The energy, enthusiasm, and support from our teachers, staff, volunteers, and families made the evening truly special.”

Through grant funding and other initiatives, JCEF helps bring innovative instructional projects to life, supporting creative teaching strategies and enhancing learning opportunities for students across the district. Events like the Harlem Wizards fundraiser make it possible for the Foundation to continue expanding its impact in JCPS schools. “We’re grateful for this partnership and excited to continue building meaningful opportunities that benefit our students and schools.”

Principal McNeill added, “Although the event itself was exciting and the players were phenomenal on both teams, its most meaningful impact will come to fruition in the months ahead, when the funds raised are awarded to our teachers as grants and invested in enhancing learning environments for students and staff across the district.” McNeill concluded emphatically, “that will be the most rewarding slam dunk!”
