Students in Ms. Fraser's class worked on a project to represent federalism in cake format.
Did you know that you can use types of cake to describe different types of Federalism? Before the Constitution and the Articles of Confederation, unitary systems of governance dominated countries around the world. In a unitary system, there is one supreme central governing authority (lots of times led by a king, queen, czar, emperor, etc.) which could be symbolized by a single layer cake. Power is not shared and what the governing body says, goes! The Articles of Confederation set up a structure that could be seen as a group of cupcakes. Each state had its own powers under the A of C but chose to work side by side in a Confederacy to reach a mutual goal. The implementation of the Constitution sought to create a stronger national government but leave most power with the states. How the concept of federalism is interpreted has been like a pendulum ever since.
For this project, students worked with groups to create a cake that symbolizes a form of federalism and a powerpoint presentation that teaches fellow students about a specific type of federalism.
