Second Semester Choice Form
Every JCPS parent was to fill ou the Second Semester Choice form to choose either the Virtual Program OR face-to-face instruction for each of their students by Monday, Nov. 30. If you were unable to fill out the form by Nov. 30 please contact your child's school for assistance. The form was to be filled out for ALL students in grades PreK-12.
The governor’s office determines if NC public schools operate under one of the following plans:
- Plan A - all students may attend school face-to-face (F2F) daily
- Plan B - all students may attend school F2F part of the time, but not every day. On the days students are not in the school building, they will engage in remote learning.
- Plan C - no students may attend school F2F. All students will participate in school remotely.
When Plan B is selected by the governor, then our Board of Education determines how students will attend school. Following the most recent governor’s orders of a Plan A option for PreK-5 and Plan B for 6-12, our Board determined that students in grades PreK-5 would attend school daily, and students in grades 6-12 would attend school in two cohorts. Each cohort attends F2F two days and engages remotely three days each week . Based on the governor’s orders and/or Board of Education action, the current plan models can change at any time during the remainder of the school year. However, parents who select the virtual learning program will remain in virtual learning for the remainder of the school year regardless of the plan model selected.
Virtual Program General Information
Johnston County Public Schools understands and empathizes with our families who may feel uncomfortable sending students back to school. Our desire is to meet the instructional needs of our students while protecting their health and well-being. For these reasons, we are continuing to offer the entirely virtual learning program for instruction in Spring 2021, the Johnston County Virtual Program.
All students who receive instruction in the Virtual Program should be independent learners who are organized, flexible, & motivated to stay actively engaged in a completely online environment. Students will need a device and reliable internet access at home. Instructional support from an adult caregiver may be needed during the day.
Pre-K-5 Virtual Program
Students in the Pre-K-5 Virtual Program will receive instruction from teachers that do not teach in the face-to-face model. If there is not a sufficient number of classroom teachers at a particular school to instruct all the students who selected virtual learning, there is a possibility that a student could be assigned to a teacher at a different school. Therefore, a student’s virtual classroom may include students from multiple schools across the district. Students in the Pre-K-5 Virtual Program are committing to:
- Engage fully in all learning activities as directed by the teacher
- Follow the same calendar as students in the face-to-face setting
- Adhere to all Board policies regarding daily attendance and behavior
- Take the same formative and summative assessments as students in the face-to-face setting. Virtual students may be required to be F2F (on-site) for completion of some assessments.
- Remain in the Virtual Program for the entirety of the Spring 2021 Semester.
Grades 6-12 Virtual Program
Students in the 6-12 Virtual Program will receive instruction from their assigned teacher at the base school. The teachers may use a webcam to stream live instruction and/or post pre-recorded lessons online for viewing at a later time, if needed. Students in the 6-12 Virtual Program will follow the daily schedule utilized at the base school. Students in the 6-12 Virtual Program are committing to:
- Engage fully in all learning activities as directed by the teacher
- Follow the same calendar as students in the face-to-face setting
- Adhere to all Board policies regarding daily attendance and behavior
- Take the same formative and summative assessments as students in the face-to-face setting. Virtual students may be required to be F2F (on-site) for completion of some assessments.
- Remain in the Virtual Program for the remainder of the Spring 2021 Semester.
- Depending upon course selection, some on-site labs may be required for students who select the virtual program.
Face-to-Face Instruction General Information
Elementary School Information (Grades K-5)
Elementary schools operate under legislated class size limits (no more than 21 in grades K-3), and teachers are assigned to either teach virtually or F2F based on the number of students at each school who select each option. Students who select F2F are given priority for classroom placement at each school. Regardless of whether you select the virtual program or F2F instruction, there is a possibility that your student will have a different teacher for the second semester. Classrooms filled to maximum capacity is a reality as long as K-5 operates in Plan A.
Middle School Information (Grades 6-8)
Teachers will teach in a hybrid model with classes composed of both students who are F2F and virtual, or teachers will teach in a complete virtual setting.
High School Information (Grades 9-12)
Teachers will teach in a hybrid model with classes composed of both students who are F2F and virtual.
