COVID-19 JCPS Superintendent Update
Good Day JCPS Families,
This is Ben Williams, Interim Superintendent of Johnston County Public Schools with important information. Last Friday, Governor Roy Cooper extended the closure of the schools in North Carolina until the end of the year. The last day for our schools is May 29. The last day for CTLA and Early College is May 15. Remote learning opportunities will continue until the last day for students. Schools will continue to communicate with you during this time.
Currently, the district is collaborating with our community health and safety partners to develop a plan for students to retrieve any personal items from schools or return any items belonging to the school. We expect to communicate and share this plan in the next week. District leadership and school principals are meeting together to develop end of year plans for both students and staff. We will follow all safety CDC guidelines as we implement the plan.
I know that there are many questions regarding our graduation plans for our Senior Class of 2020. This week, we developed a graduation planning work group consisting of student leaders, high school principals, district leaders, and community health and safety partners. It is our intention to plan a meaningful event for our seniors. We will also survey senior parents as a part of this process.
The planning is moving quickly and will be communicated with you soon. Each high school will communicate how additional senior awards and recognitions will be conducted.
We will not conduct the traditional high school graduation on the original date of May 29 or the May 16 date for CTLA and Early College. We are currently assessing the feasibility of moving forward with the backup date of June 12 previously communicated to you.
I want to assure you that our most important goal at this time is to provide a graduation event for our seniors. I am proud of each high school community who is rallying behind these seniors to highlight them and promote their accomplishments. You are so important to us.
Next week, May 4-8, is Teacher Appreciation Week. We encourage you to check out our social media pages for the virtual events we have planned to celebrate and honor our teachers next week. Finally, we will hold a virtual Teacher Job Fair on May 14. Anyone interested can register by visiting our JCPS website.
