Outstanding students recognized at BOE Special Session

The Johnston County Board of Education recognized outstanding students who excelled in academic competitions and in athletics at their May 30 Special Session.

High School Battle of the Books

The Johnston County Board of Education recognized the Cleveland High School Battle of the Books team for winning first place at the annual High School Battle of the Books Competition on March 22. The team placed second in the regional competition which was held on April 9 in Louisburg. Elementary Battle of the Books

The Johnston County Board of Education recognized the Pine Level Elementary Battle of the Books team for winning first place at the annual Elementary School Battle of the Books Competition on March 6. The team won third place at the regional competition on April 13 at Polenta Elementary. Science Olympiad Junior Varsity

The Johnston County Board of Education recognized the Polenta Elementary Junior Varsity Science Olympiad team for winning first place at the annual Science Olympiad Competition on April 6. Track State Champion

The Johnston County Board of Education recognized West Johnston High student Hayley Whoolery for winning the 3A State Championship in the 1600 meter run on May 17. Whoolery ran the 1600 meter run in 5 minutes, 2 seconds. She also finished second in the state in the two mile run the same day, helping the Lady Wildcats to an eighth place finish as a team.

Boys State Golf Champion

The Johnston County Board of Education recognized Clayton High student Brady Hooks for winning the Boys Golf 3A State Championship on May 14. Hooks shot an even par 144 to win by 3 strokes in the two-day tournament at Foxfire Resort near Pinehurst. He is Clayton High’s first individual golf state champion.

Boys Tennis State Champion

The Clayton High Boys Tennis team was recognized by the Johnston County Board of Education for winning the 3A State Championship on May 18. This is the second year in a row the team has won the title and had an undefeated season. Three members of the team won individual state championships the previous weekend. Banks Evans, who was named MVP of the Team Championship Match, won the 3A Individual Singles Tennis Championship. Foster Evans, teamed with Sam Jones to win the 3A Individual Doubles Championship.
