On Wednesday, February 20, 2019 the Smithfield-Selma High School Navy Junior ROTC under the direction of retired Navy Commander Michael Wegman and retired Marine Corps Master Sergeant Randy Griffin, hosted the Area Six Manager, retired Navy Commander Griffith Jones, for a comprehensive program inspection that occurs every two years in each of the 66 schools that make up NJROTC in North and South Carolina's Area Six.
The SSS NJROTC Unit prepared for months for this inspection which included a formal personnel uniform inspection, drill demonstrations by two of the unit's teams, an awards ceremony, and a Pass-in-Review. The ceremony was attended by hundreds of SSS students and their teachers, administrators, and local recruiters and veterans organizations. "Thank you students for the tremendous support of your Navy JROTC unit, testimony to how valued the program is by this school," said CDR Jones during his closing remarks.
The remainder of the day was spent auditing the unit's supply, administration, financial, and academic programs for compliance with Navy directives.
Commander Michael Wegman said, "I am extremely pleased with how our drill teams and color guard performed during the ceremonial portion of the inspection, and the support we get from our school is second to none!"
