On September 11, 2018, Smithfield-Selma High School (SSS) honored those who risked and sacrificed their lives to save others on September 11, 2001. Student cadets from the SSS ROTC program displayed the America flag (see figure 1), and ROTC cadet Lieutenant Commander Sanjuana Antonio-Olguin (see figure 2) reviewed the terrorist attacks that occurred in 2001.
SSS Principal, Mr. David Allen, introduced guest speaker, Mr. Ted Godwin, Johnston County Vice-Chairman of the Board (figure 3). Mr. Godwin discussed how many of the students in the audience may have been too young to remember the events of September 11, 2001, but he emphasized how first responders, such as those being honored in the audience (see figure 4) risk their lives daily to save the lives of others.

The ceremony concluded with a moving rendition of Taps played by SSS student, Ben Woodall (see figure 5).
