DRES student tops Johnston County Elementary Spelling Bee

Students from 27 different elementary schools competed in the 2020 Johnston County Elementary Spelling Bee on Jan. 23 at Selma Elementary School.

Elementary school students from each of the JCPS elementary schools, as well as fifth grade students from Selma Middle and Benson Middle participated in the Spelling Bee. Students from Southside Christian School and Neuse Charter School also participated.

The first place winner of the Spelling Bee was Dixon Road Elementary student Phaedre Avanzado. The winning word was ‘impregnable.’

The second place winner was Cooper Academy student Karson Lloyd, and the third place winner was Powhatan Elementary student Bria Jones.
