JCEF Adult Spelling Bee set for Oct. 29

The Johnston County Education Foundation Adult Spelling Bee will be held on Oct. 29 at Smithfield-Selma High School.  Check in for the spelling bee begins at 5:30 PM and the event begins at 6:00 PM.

The spelling bee utilizes team spelling. A moderator will call out word and use it in a sentence, then four-person teams all write down their version of the spelling. Time is quickly called and words are handed to the team judges. The correct spelling is then displayed for judges to use to check the spelling. As long as teams spell correctly, they are in the game. When a team misspells a word, they can "buy" the word (until the second half of the difficult word round) in order to stay in the game.

Each team is encouraged to decorate their table with a theme and dress in costume! In addition for competeing for the Adult Spelling Bee trophy, teams are competing for best costume and the most spirit.

All of the money raised at the spelling bee supports the Johnston County Education Foundation, with provides scholarships for students and grants for teachers in Johnston County Public Schools. JCEF provides scholarship for students and grants for teachers. Since its inception, more than $1,000,000 has benefited teachers and students of Johnston County Public Schools.
