3rd Grade Mayor

The third graders at Riverwood Elementary had the opportunity to participate in a “real” election to create a relevant experience while learning about local government. After studying and learning about their town and its leaders, students wrote opinion speeches on why they should be elected mayor. Each student presented their speech to their classmates. Students voted and elected a mayor candidate from their class. The winner from each third grade class proceeded on to a grade level election where the elected candidates presented their speech to the entire third grade student body. Students voted once again and one third grade student became mayor of 3rd grade. Through this process, students not only learned important vocabulary and information about our local government but experienced what it's truly like to be part of a local election. Although, there could only be one winner chosen for our third grade mayor, each student won the prize of confidence, cooperation, leadership and responsibility.
