Science Olympiad 2019

Our Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade students competed in the school’s 6th annual Science Olympiad Competition on Saturday, April 6th at Corinth Holders High School. The competition was an all-day event filled with brainpower, fun, excitement, and comradery.

Tryouts were held in October, and the top scorers were selected to join two teams (Varsity and JV) comprised of 36 students. In order to prepare for the events, (there were 20 in all) students met every Tuesday with their coach to learn the content and build or design their models. In addition to learning 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade science curriculum, students built bottle rockets, towers out of pasta, ramps, vehicles using K’nex, and various devices out of duct tape. Science Olympiad takes a lot of commitment and the students hard work paid off this year. We earned 4th Place overall in the varsity competition, exceeding the scores of 16 other schools. Our JV team earned 2nd place out of 5 teams competing in the JV division. Students also won countless medals in their individual events.

We are so proud of all who participated and are already looking forward to next year’s competition! If you are interested in trying out, or would like to help coach an event, we’d love to have you. You can find more information on the website for North Carolina Science Olympiad (http://www.sciencenc.com/). Once again, congratulations to all who participated in this year’s competition. You make Four Oaks Elementary School proud!
