Senior Jamie Williford Selected as Class of 2025 Levine Scholar
Cleveland High School Senior Jamie Williford has been selected as a Class of 2025 Levine Scholar. The Levine Scholars Program is a prestigious scholarship opportunity offered at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
As a Levine Scholar, Jamie will receive full tuition, room, board, a grant to implement a service project, and four summers of experiences that will develop leadership skills, social awareness and an international perspective. The total value of this four-year package is estimated at $105,000. Civic engagement is at the heart of the Levine Scholars Program. In addition to rigorous academics, scholars have opportunities for volunteering and internships with nonprofit organizations and participation in grant projects with community partners.
Jamie learned about this scholarship when he attended an information session presented by the school counselors and figured he would apply. The scholarship application process begins at the beginning of senior year and it is very competitive. Upon finding out that he was a recipient of the scholarship, Jamie says, “I was beyond shocked. To be honest, I still am. When I applied I thought it would be nice just to give it a go, but never once did I think I could actually be awarded a scholarship. So when I looked on my portal and saw a big ‘Congratulations’, I was brought to tears.”
In addition to being an excellent student, Jamie is very involved with several extracurricular activities. He has participated in Student Council for all four years of high school, has been a member of the Chess Club for the past three years, and currently serves as President of First Priority, which he helped establish in his sophomore year.
When asked what words of advice he would share with rising freshmen, Jamie shared, “Be open to new people and experiences. You only get four years in high school, which may feel like a lot, but it really isn’t. So get involved, and really open yourself up to new experiences. Finding places outside of your comfort zone is the best way to grow, and in high school you have the chance to grow like never before.”
Jamie plans to pursue a Bachelors of Science degree in Mathematics with a concentration in Statistics at UNC-Charlotte. His future plans include opening a non-profit organization focused on helping veterans and low-income families find affordable housing, with the hopes of expanding on this idea.
Jamie is the son of Ed and Deborah Williford of Clayton.
