Clayton High FCCLA Wins State-Level Safety Award

Clayton High School's FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) chapter was unable to attend state competition this spring, but that didn't stop them from competing through the FCCLA National Program - FACTS (Families Acting for Community Traffic Safety). Luckily, two of their members, Ashley Gutierrez and Lexi Barrett, were able to complete the face-to-face part of their project before schools were out for the year, and the rest was completed online. FCCLA partnered with Clayton High School's JoCo Teen Drivers club and the Circle of Friends club to create an interactive lesson plan that would focus on passenger and pedestrian safety. For the first goal of raising safety awareness, the Clayton FCCLA students talked with the other students about common hazards for pedestrians and for car passengers. For the second goal, they created an interactive hands-on activity to create whistles to remind the students to STOP LOOK and LISTEN when in a dangerous traffic situation.

Safe communities and families are a main component of FCCLA and of the Family and Consumer Sciences curriculums in our high schools, and this project was a great way to culminate and refine those skills, while building relationships with other groups at the school!

Clayton High FCCLA was awarded the First Place prize in NC for this project, which includes a grant to continue the work of spreading awareness of community traffic safety. This award is made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of Ford Driving Skills for Life and the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA). Clayton High FCCLA plans to use this grant money to continue the safety presentations and safety whistles initiative at CHS and at other local area schools in the fall.

If you have a group that would benefit from this project and would like more information, please contact the FCCLA adviser at Clayton High School, Rachel Langdon, at rachellangdon@johnston.k12.nc.us
