Opening Day Message
This is Bennett Jones, principal of Clayton High School, with some important information regarding the beginning of the new school year.
Tomorrow, August 29th, is our first day of the 2022-2023 school year! Our school hours this year are 7:15 - 2:15. Students may enter the building at 6:45 daily and should be in class by 7:10. A bell will ring at 7:00 for students to move to their class, a second bell will ring at 7:05 to end breakfast, and all students should be in classrooms at 7:15. All students should report to their advisory teacher on Monday morning. Homeroom teachers are listed on student schedules and lists will be posted throughout the school to direct students where to report.
If you are a car rider, remember that car riders can be dropped off either at the front door or beside the main gym starting at 6:45. A video describing these patterns can be found on our website. As a reminder, dropping off students on the streets or other parking lots is not permitted for your student’s safety.
Students who park on campus must have purchased a parking pass…information for purchasing can be found online. For all car traffic, please be advised that it will take at least one week for everyone to get accustomed to the traffic patterns around the school. Please allow yourself time to drive safely and please be patient in the event of long lines. Clayton Police and school staff will be assisting with traffic this week, please follow their directions. Finally, please note that there is construction ongoing in the soccer parking lot so that area will not be available until construction is completed.
In the afternoon, car riders should be picked up from 2:15-2:30. Please coordinate with your student as to where to meet you after school in regards to the same areas as morning dropoff. Again, please know that there will be a lot of congestion as we get accustomed to the traffic patterns - please follow all directions from staff and thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
All buses will unload and load in the lot near the tennis courts. Students who have bus issues will be called to meet with the administrator in charge of buses during the first day. Bus information is all online this year in PowerSchool and the Here Comes the Bus app…please find this information accordingly. Also, please be aware that for the first day or two, you may need to have alternate transportation options available as the bus department works through the beginning of school process.
Next, there is a detailed process by which we handle scheduling issues. Please encourage your student to listen to their advisory teacher Monday morning for instructions and to ask them if they have any questions. If a student has a hole in their schedule, they will report to the Old Gym during that block where they will meet with a staff member to fix their schedule. Students requesting early release or late arrival will report to the cafeteria during that time to get the required documentation completed. Late arrival and early dismissal will begin on Tuesday, August 30th for those that have it.
A student/parent guide is provided for your review. All students will watch a video from me during Advisory on Monday where I will share further information about our school processes. Also, tomorrow’s message will share further details about required forms and necessary information from parents. Be sure to check our websites, our social media platforms, and your emails for information routinely.
Finally, we fully anticipate that there will be questions and we will navigate through some challenges in the first couple of days as we settle into a new year with over 2000 students. I thank you in advance for your patience, your understanding, and your cooperation as we work together to ensure a successful school year for all of our students.
