CHS Weekly Update - 5/16/2021

this is Bennett Jones, principal of Clayton High School with the weekly update for the upcoming week, May 17th - 21st, 2021.

First, I would like to remind everyone that this is the last week of our regular schedule for this school year. As a reminder, only those needing to take exams in certain CTE courses or EOC exams in Math 1, Math 3, English 2, and Biology must attend in person next week. The detailed exam schedule for next week is posted on our website.

Next, I would like to announce that due to a variety of reasons, the PowderPuff game that was set for Thursday is cancelled and will not be held. However, we are pleased to have our CHS Senior Celebration on Thursday from 3:00 - 5:00 followed by our CHS Comets ALL IN and Senior Parade at 6:00 in downtown Clayton. All of those scheduled to be in the parade earlier this year are invited to participate as are all of our seniors for this tremendous event in our town.

On that note, seniors and senior parents are asked to please check and read all emails daily - there is a lot of information and reminders that are being sent out to you regarding celebrations and end-of-year activities!

Two pieces of Information were sent by the district last week. The first is regarding the Virtual Academy for next school year...please see that information on the JCPS website. Also, the district reiterated the continued use of masks in schools while indoors. Please know that we will continue to follow the guidelines for masks and social distancing that we have practiced this spring. Students may remove masks while outside provided they are socially distanced from others.

Students that checked out a Chromebook and/or hotspot from the school should plan to return when they take their last exam. Information regarding return of these items can be found on the CHS website.

Next, information regarding summer learning for credit completion and credit recovery can be found at this link and the application is found at this link. There will be two summer sessions running from June 7th - 24th and June 28th - July 15th. Students needing to complete course material may attend either or both of the sessions and transportation can be provided. Again, I highly encourage students who have struggled academically towards graduation and need additional credits to consider attending in-person summer learning. Any questions regarding summer learning can be directed to Mr. Jeff Sullivan.

As we wind down the school year, I need to make it clear to everyone that there will not be any toleration of students who are disruptive to our learning environment. If students violate disciplinary policies, they will be sent home to work virtually the remainder of the week and will be scheduled for independent exams if needed next week. Quite simply, we have too much work to be done for any student to come to school and disrupt the teaching and learning process for others. I appreciate all of our students meeting our expectations for their behaviors.

Parents and students, as we near the end of the most difficult school year that any of us have ever experienced, I want to thank you all for your continued support. I encourage all of our students to do their very best this last week and during exams so that they can enjoy the much deserved break that the summer brings. Let’s push hard towards the finish line so that we can finish strong like Comets do!

Thank you as always for your continued support and for being Comets ALL IN, have a good evening and a great week!
