David L. Hawks is a lifelong educator starting his 46th year in education and is currently the principal of West View Elementary School. After retiring in July 2021, he returned to administration in January 2022 becoming principal of North Johnston High School where he created a student focused learning environment that allowed teachers to improve student academic achievement. He became principal of West View Elementary School on July 1, 2023 and followed the successful tenure of Chenetra Mangum who is now the principal of Cleveland Middle School. Mr. Hawks plans to build on West View’s past success and work with the staff and parents to make the school even more successful.
Prior to retirement, he served as principal for fourteen years at Durham School of the Arts, a magnet arts school in Durham, North Carolina. The school served a student population of 1,800 students in grades six through twelve that offered a multifaceted arts program combined with rigorous academics. The school was consistently recognized as a North Carolina School of Distinction and in 2016 & 2017 with a "B" academic rating with high growth and in 2018 & 2019 with an "A" academic rating and in the top 50 high growth schools for both years. The school has been recognized since 2011 by US News and World Report as one of the best high schools in the nation and in 2013 was recognized by US News and World Report as the top high school in North Carolina and ranking 176th in the nation. Previously, he was principal of Bunn Middle School for three years in Franklin County which was recognized as a North Carolina School of Distinction under his leadership. Prior to that for six years, he was principal of Zeb Vance Elementary School in Vance County which was twice recognized as a North Carolina School of Distinction and twice as a North Carolina School of Excellence. Prior to this position he was the Director of Bands at Roanoke Rapids High School for seventeen years. Mr. Hawks received his Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1978. He completed a Masters Degree in Music Education from East Carolina University in 1987 and a Masters Degree in Educational Administration from East Carolina University in 1990.
