If you plan to join the military:

If you plan to attend college:
- STEP 1: Complete NC Residency Application
  Residency Determination Service (RDS) is part of the 3 step process when applying to college in North Carolina. You must submit your RDS application before you apply to any school in North Carolina. You can complete this step as early as the summer before your senior year. The process can take about 30 minutes and usually requires documentation from your parent or guardian.   Complete the RDS application to obtain your Residency Certification Number (RCN). You MUST know your CFNC login information in order to complete this step. Do not create another CFNC login if you already have one.
  
  Narrow down your list of colleges where you'd like to apply. Don't forget JCC.
  - Research the application deadlines and admissions processes for those schools.
  - Using CFNC or The Common Application, begin your applications to college. Your application will successfully arrive at most schools using CFNC.

- STEP 2: Complete Your College Application(s)
  Applying to college can be a full-time job. It is time consuming and requires organization and determination, but the reward is worth it in the long run. Obtaining some form of training after high school, whether it be a on-the-job training, a certificate, a diploma, or a degree, will likely decrease your unemployment rate and increase your wages.
- STEP 3: Complete the FAFSA
  Paying for college is a huge concern among high school students. The following sources of financial aid will help you develop a financial aid package that will help you pay for college. IT TAKES WORK! Let's look at your options, which combined, will make college a feasible option for you.
  - Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) - Always start with the FAFSA because it’s necessary to determine your eligibility for federal and state financial aid. It's FREE - you should never be asked to pay to complete the FAFSA. Many scholarships require that you complete the FAFSA. The FAFSA opens in October of every year.
    - Complete the FAFSA
    - CFNC Town Hall Meeting on FAFSA and Scholarships - Covers FAQs and Common FAFSA Errors and how to interpret your financial aid letter.
  - Grants and Scholarships - Money from outside sources that typically does not have to be paid back. Plenty of outside organizations offer scholarships tailored to academic interests, talents, extracurricular activities, career goals, geographic location, and many more factors. Keep an eye on deadlines which could fall as early as the summer before senior year.

    - Do your own scholarship search! Don't forget there are scholarships for special circumstances. For example, there are scholarships for left-handed students, students with handicaps or illnesses, students with religious affiliations, and even short and tall students. There are also scholarships for those with parents that have handicaps, diseases, military backgrounds, etc. If you can dream it, search for a scholarship about it. In addition, don't forget to ask your parents to check with their employer to see if they offer scholarships for children of their employees.
  - Federal work-study - Allows students to work part-time jobs to help pay for their education expenses.

  - Student loans - Students and parents can find education loans available from the federal government and private institutions.
