Standards for Athletic Eligibility for NJMS & JCPS
IN ORDER TO TRY OUT FOR ANY SPORT AT NJMS, ALL STUDENTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING STANDARDS FOR ACADEMICS, ATTENDANCE, AND MORE.
Academics:
All 6th graders upon promotion from 5th grade are eligible for the fall semester excluding football which starts in the 7th grade.
In order to be eligible for athletics, students in grades 6 (after first nine weeks), 7 and 8 must meet local promotion standards, must have a 70 or above average for the previous semester, and must pass at least one less course than the number of required “core” classes each semester.
A student is either eligible or ineligible at the beginning of the semester based on previous semester grades.
Fall & Winter 2026 tryouts will use 2nd Semester grades from the 2025-2026 School Year: A student must pass 70% of courses taken and meet local promotional standards, which means a student cannot fail more than one class, including enhancement and core classes.
Fall & Winter 2026 tryouts will use Attendance reports from Semester 2 of 2025-2026 School Year: Any 7th, or 8th grade student must be present at least 85% of the preceding semester, which means a student cannot miss more than 13 days of school.
Spring 2027 tryouts All Students will use the same Grade and Attendance rule as stated above.
Legal Birth & Age Limits: The principal must have evidence of the legal birth date of the student. A student shall NOT participate on a 6th, 7th, or 8th-grade middle school team if he/she becomes 15 years of age ON OR BEFORE AUGUST 31 of the said school year.
Legal Residency: You must live in the NJMS school district or have transferred paperwork filed with the county office.
Concussion Forms: You must have a concussion form filled out BEFORE you step out on the field or court. This can be signed in FinalForms.
Medical Examination: The student MUST receive a medical examination signed by a licensed medical doctor each year (365 days). The signed physical form must be turned in to coaches BEFORE students can try out or participate. This must be uploaded in FinalForms.
Final Forms
All eligible players must have a Current FINAL FORMS Account. More information can be found under the Athletics tab on our school website or https://johnston-nc.finalforms.com/.
Both the parent/guardian and student must complete the required forms before a player is eligible to participate in tryouts or workouts.
