    • Making Middle College Proud!

Recently, Kamil Ewais-Orozco, a Senior at Johnston County Middle College, traveled all the way to Higuey in the Dominican Republic in order to provide students with school uniforms, towels and blankets, school supplies, toiletries and a month’s worth of food. This trip was made possible through his charity, The Greater Good (TGG). When asked about his experience, Kamil said, “My recent trip to Higuey was one the most rewarding and humbling experiences in my life thus far. The months of effort and sacrifice leading up to the trip were difficult, but I’d do it 100 times over to experience this bliss again. Seeing kids, the same age as a lot of my cousins, run around excitedly over receiving new school uniforms blew me away. Most kids would be pretty angry if they received clothes as a gift, but not these guys. I didn’t think what I was doing would make such a difference, but I received endless hugs and thanks, and that’s what made it all worth it for me. The gratitude and humility of my new friends, despite living in a place where the water and power were out most of the day, was remarkable.” Kamil says he is grateful for the support of others who contributed to his mission and helped to make his trip possible. “I will forever be thankful to everyone who supported me and put me in a position to help these children. This was a group effort and would not have been possible without the active support of my school system and the kind people who donated out of the kindness in their hearts.” Kamil hopes to travel to the region in the future to provide further support. He also hopes that his trip will have a lasting impact on the community. He says, “I hope to someday see them in a position to help others, just like I was.”

    • JCTD @ Fall Fest 17

JoCo Teen Drivers (JCTD) reached out the to the community to spread the message about safe driving on the Johnston Community Campus during the campus wide Fall Festival event. Our goal was to reach high school students, college students, and faculty members to promote safe driving practices and have the community pledge to adhere to safe driving practices. We demonstrated how difficult it is to walk and perform simple actions when a person is under the influence by having pledgers wear the drunk and buzzed goggles to throw a ball into a trashcan that was only a few feet away from them. Out of the hundreds of people to visit our booth on 9/20, only 11 people were able to make the ball go into the trashcan.
