Mrs. Chareen Monk
Welcome to Speech Therapy at South Smithfield Elementary School!
I am thrilled to be returning to South Smithfield Elementary for my fourth year. I have been a speech therapist for almost 30 years, but SSE feels like home. My therapy room is #37 on the 3-5 wing. I serve on the Assisive Technology Team in Johnston County Schools so I travel from school to school but SSE is my base school. If you need to reach me, you may email or call my room and I will return your call or message as soon as I am able to.
If your child has been assigned to me for speech, I will be in contact with you to schedule their yearly IEP. The purpose of this is to review their goals that we will be working on over the next year in speech therapy. If you have concerns before that time, please feel free to reach out to me.
Just a few reminders:
- For students who come to SSE just for speech, we follow the Johnston County Schools Restart Calendar for teacher workdays, holidays and early releases.
- For updates regarding inclement weather, please check the county website: https://www.johnston.k12.nc.us/Page/12367 or look for postings on WRAL or ABC News.
- Please let me know if your child has any special dietary restrictions since we sometimes use food and flavor additives in speech.
- My email is chareenmonk@johnston.k12.nc.us or I can be reached at (919) 934-8979 extension 5762.
I am looking forward to a great school year with you!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Chareen Monk

Beginning of Grade (BOG) Testing for 3rd Graders
As your child begins third grade, you will see a concentrated focus in ensuring students can read at or above grade level and are making progress in reading proficiency. The goal is to ensure all third grade students can read, comprehend, integrate, and apply complex texts needed for secondary education and career success. As part of the Read to Achieve law (G.S. §115C-83.1) passed by the General Assembly in 2012, your child will take the Beginning-of-Grade 3 (BOG3) Reading Test to establish a baseline measure of beginning third-grade reading skills.
