Mrs. Ashley Woodside
Hi Cooper Family! My name is Mrs. Woodside and I teach second grade virtually at Cooper Academy. I will be a "virtual teacher" for the first part of the 2020-2021 school year. While this school year is much different than past years, I look forward to getting to know my students & hopefully one day teaching them in person! I received my undergraduate degree in Biology from Peace College in 2015, and then graduated with my masters in education from NCSU in 2019. GO WOLFPACK I live with my husband, Christopher, and our 3 dogs (Piper, Luke & Jagger). I also have a horse named Andrew! You will hear all about them this year. I will update my website as more information comes in reguarding our upcoming school year. See you all *virtually* soon!
We will use Google Classroom as our platform for learning. Our class code is: z3euf6e. All of our assignments for the day will be under "classwork" with the date.
Mrs. Woodside’s Class
Syllabus Fall 2020-2021
Welcome to our *virtual* class for the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year! I am so excited to begin this virtual adventure with you. My name is Mrs. Woodside! I live in Willow Spring with my husband Christopher, our three dogs- Piper, Luke & Jagger, our cat Cole, and my horse Andrew Thomas! You will hear all about them this year. This is not how we normally begin a new school year together, however, I am still looking forward to getting to know each of you! In this document I will be going over some policies & procedures, sort of like a syllabus.
My Expectations for Virtual Learning:
- Students should be in a quiet environment.
- Participate and stay on task.
- Complete assignments-they will be graded & feedback provided.
- Students should be muted while I'm teaching to reduce distractions and reduce glitching of the program.
- Ask questions if you have them!
- Attendance will be taken for virtual sessions- you will be counted “present” if you participate in one of the two live calls each day. If you cannot attend either- please just watch the recordings & complete the assignments to be marked as present!
Expectations for Live Sessions: Live sessions will be in google meet, or zoom- depending on which program works better for our class & students. Please be on task, mute your speaker, and participate!
My contact information: My preferred method of communication is class dojo messages- since it comes straight to my phone I answer those messages the fastest. During school hours my phone number is (919) 553-0256 extension 2324. My email address is firstname.lastname@example.org. (Bunch is my maiden name, I recently got married so my name hasn't changed to Woodside everywhere yet!)
Office Hours: From 12:00pm to 1:00 pm I will be available to answer questions, phone calls, emails, dojo messages to help you and your student on this virtual journey. Please do not hesitate to reach out.
Attendance: The first week of school (8/17-8/21) will be our “orientation week.” During this time I will post daily classdojo messages giving basic assignments. To be counted present- you will simply respond to my post by posting “Present.” The second week of school (8/24-9/28) will be our “virtual week” where we learn to use the different programs that we will be working on. Same thing- each day simply respond “present” on classdojo updates. Instruction will begin the week of (8/31-9/4). Attending a live session (either 9:00-11:30) or (1-3:30) will count towards being counted as “present.” If you cannot attend either session-you will be counted “present” IF you complete all of the assignments for that day. I have to mark attendance by 12:00 noon- so please make sure you show me some kind of evidence of being “present” by that time or you will be marked absent.
Schedule: See the 2 schedule options below. Choose which times work best for you- option a or b- it doesn't matter which one as long as you attend one or the other & complete all the assignments for that day. Note that the live sessions are (9:00-11:30) or (1:00-3:30). ( Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays.) Both the am & pm sessions will be the same. Wednesdays are planning days for teachers, there will be no live sessions. So use this day to catch up on any independent assignments or work on Lexia, Dreambox, etc.)
*These are the schedules that I was given by the school. Do what is best for you and your family to complete the activities for the day.

Morning Meeting: Morning Meeting is how we would start each day together on campus at Cooper Academy. All students & the teacher would normally join together in a circle for greetings, share, and a quick discussion which is designed to build classroom relationships, social skills, and sets us up for a great day of learning. While I recognize we are not in a face to face environment currently due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I still see value in continuing Morning Meeting during each live session to keep students engaged and socialized.
Fundations: Fundations is a program we use to teach phonics instruction. Students will be given a fundations folder with letter pieces to use to build words and sentences as soon as we are given the student materials and can make them for pickup!
Into Reading: All of Johnston County Public School (JCPS) students k-5 are using the Into Reading program from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to help keep instruction consistent across the county. You can access these online resources through the classlink webpage which will automatically log your student in.
Math Investigations: Like Into Reading, Math Investigations is used across JCPS to ensure consistency county wide. This will also be available to login through the classlink website.
Classlink: This is the website where you will go to so it automatically signs you in to all apps we may use. It remembers all your passwords so once you sign in here you're good to access the applications below. Yay for not having to remember all the passwords!
Lexia: This is an individualized reading program for students to work on specific skills tailored to their needs. There are different “levels” for students to work through. Each level represents a new geographical location on Earth for students to be immersed in culture & other knowledge about that particular place. The target time varies from student to student- the goal is to reach your targeted time each week. It is fine to go over your goal. Lexia will be accessed through the classlink webpage as well.
Dreambox: This is a math program we will be using this year! Much like lexia, it is individualized to each student and their needs in math. The target is 5 lessons a week for each student. This will also be accessed through classlink.
Google Classroom: Also accessed through classlink- google classroom is where I will post the assignments for every day. You will go to where it says “classwork” at the top & find the days date to complete your assignments. If you're not on a chromebook use your students email & login to access google.
Enhancements: All enhancements this year will be virtual (PE, Music, Art, Technology, STEAM) via zoom calls. I will try to post their weekly assignments each Monday.
Materials: In the beginning of the year students will be given the following items:
- First Into Reading workbook
- Math Investigations workbook
- Fundations Folder (once we receive the shipment)
- Math manipulatives in a bag
- Writing Journal
- Chromebook & Charger.
As we move through the different units and need additional workbooks, items will be available for pickup at Cooper Academy. If pickup doesn’t work for you -please let me know so we can coordinate a drop off.
Don't know where to start? Try this link here to get you started & answer all your questions! It has “how to” links to help you on your journey.
Grading: Cooper Academy uses the Standards Based grading model- this means we do not assign grades based on percentages. We grade students based on how well they are progressing with a certain skill. Below will tell you what each letter means. M-Mastery, P-Progressing, B-Beginning to progress, N-Not Demonstrated
Revise & Redo: Some assignments, especially our writing pieces, may require some editing.
I look forward to a fantastic school year with each of you! Happy learning!
Love, Mrs. Woodside
We are sharing information with our families about the Targeted Support & Improvement State Level guidance for schools who have underperformed on state-wide assessments during the past few years. Of course, last year we did not have End-of-Grade testing in North Carolina due to COVID-19 school closures.
We are offering a new opportunity for our families this winter break. Parents are invited to sign up to receive holiday meal kits that will be distributed from all of our high school sites. Each meal kit will include seven days of packaged breakfast and lunch meals per child.
Every JCPS parent must fill out the Second Semester Choice form to choose either the Virtual Program OR face-to-face instruction for each of their students. The Second Semester Choice form is to be filled out for ALL students in grades PreK-12. If a child is going to participate in face-to-face instruction for the second semester, the parent will be asked to fill out transportation information for the student in the form. A form for each student should be completed by Nov. 30.
Information on social distancing in school settings has been recently updated by the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS). Upon receiving information from the NCDHHS, we consulted with the Johnston County Public Health Department on the impact these updates will have on our school system. This ongoing collaboration continues to guide our decision-making as students return to classrooms for in-person instruction.
