Hi Cooper Family! My name is Mrs. Woodside and I teach second grade at Cooper Academy. This is my 5th year teaching! I received my undergraduate degree in Biology from Peace College in 2015, and then graduated with my masters in elementary education from NCSU in 2019. GO WOLFPACK! I live with my husband, and our dogs Luke & Piper, and our cat named Cole. I also have a horse named Andrew! 

From January-May I will be teaching face-to-face in the classroom setting at Cooper Academy. However- due to the surge in coronavirus cases, Johnston County has since been shut down from Dec. 14-Jan 15 at this time. January 18th is MLK Jr. holiday, so we are set to have our first day on campus together as a class on January 19. As you know- things have changed often so this too could change. Please stay tuned for updates! 



  • We will use Google Classroom as our platform for learning. Our class code is: uvkfomr. All of our assignments for the day will be under "classwork" with the date listed.

    January 4th, 2021 - May 28th, 2021



    Virtual Expectations: (January 4th-January 15th)

    • Attend our live session from 9am-10am daily via google meet. Depending on the assignments & activities we have planned it could not take an hour- or it could run over a little bit. To access the link- your student will sign into the google classroom and the link for the meet will be at the top.   
    • Complete all assignments in google classroom daily. This is the platform we will be using for our class!
    • Being in class virtually is just like being in school- please act and dress accordingly. 
    • Attendance will be taken daily by 12:00pm. If you cannot attend our live session or complete any assignments- please send me a dojo message so I can try to get your absence excused. If I do not hear from you by 12:00, see your student in the google meet, or see any work from your student they will be marked absent. Once your student has turned in their assignments then I can change their absence to “present.” 
    • If I do not receive assignments, they will be reported in the gradebook as an “N” for needs improvement. 
    • An email from google classroom will be sent to you if an assignment is missing. 
    • If we have to go past Jan 19th virtually- I will update you through class dojo & our website. I update classdojo more often than our website.
    • PLEASE check class dojo daily. I send private messages often and update the “class story” with what is happening weekly, sometimes daily if needed. My email: is please feel free to email me at any time. Classdojo is my preferred method of communication. ClassDojo should automatically connect if you are already connected through your students old teacher. If not I will send an invite to your phone or email. 

    Classlink: Once your student has logged in through their chromebook- the will click on the webpage that opens and says "class link" or "my apps" this will bring you to the classlink page. Classlink stores passwords for students to get into multiple apps with just one click! 

    Lexia: Lexia is a personalized reading program for your student. They should work weekly in lexia towards their time goal. Their goal is displayed when you log into the Lexia homescreen.Please ask me if you need further assistance with this. 

    Dreambox: Dreambox is a personalized math program for your student. Students are required to complete 5 lessons weekly. Students can see how many lessons they have completed when they login to the dreambox dashboard. Again ask if you have any questions about this. 

    Face to Face expectations: (January 19th, 2021-May 28th, 2021)

    Daily Folder: This is a folder that will come back and forth to school every day.  Any important papers, tests, reminders, or notes will be sent home in this folder. The folder also holds the nightly reading log and an “important pouch” that is used to send any money to school for things like lunch, book orders, etc.  Please fill out the card inside the pouch as to what the money's for.   If money isn't labeled on the form it will go on their lunch accounts. Their behavior will be marked on a calendar in their folder to help them goal set and track their progress. 


    Weekly Folder:  This red folder will be filled with your child’s graded classwork and will be sent home on Tuesday of every school week.   Please be sure to carefully review the work inside so you can see what your child’s doing well and what skills might need more practice.  After you have reviewed the work, please sign the cover sheet and return the folder to school the very next school day. 


    Class Dojo:  I use class dojo as my main form of communication with parents, and also for our behaviour management system. We will use positive reinforcement in the form of green dojos, which add up as “points”  and will be exchanged at the end of the week for a coupon to use in class.  If students are breaking classroom rules, then they will receive red dojo’s and it will take a point away from them. If you have any questions, concerns, updates for me- please private message me through dojo messaging. 


    Homework : I will send homework home weekly. It will come home on Monday in their daily folder and be due Friday. 


    Lunch/Breakfast Money:  Please send all money for the cafeteria in the “Important Pouch” located in the daily folder.  Feel free to pay for lunch by the week or even month.  Children have their own account for the money to be deposited to.  They will receive a number to use when purchasing things from the cafeteria. 


    Attendance:  The first bell rings at 8:25, the second bell rings at 8:55. If your child is absent, please send in a note the day he/she returns or email me/dojo message me. This will determine whether your child’s absence is excused.  Please try to have your child at school on time every day for the entire day.  If appointments must be made, please make them for as late in the day as possible.  


    Birthdays: You are welcome to bring in a snack for your child’s birthday. Please let me know in advance if you plan to do this. You may bring in store-bought items only and please provide any necessary items for serving it.  Please confirm with me what you are bringing so I can accommodate any classroom allergies. 


    Change in transportation: If your child will be leaving school in a different manner than normal, YOU MUST send in a note or email/dojo me. We are required to send your child home according to their normal manner unless otherwise told. Be sure whoever is picking your child up is on the pick-up list and that they have their ID.


    Medications: If your child has a medical issue that requires medication to be at school, they MAY NOT TRANSPORT it themselves and it MUST BE KEPT IN THE OFFICE. We are not allowed to administer any medications in the classroom.  Please see the front office for any necessary paperwork that needs to be filled out.  


    Contacting me:  Please feel free to contact me at any time regarding any issue!  I believe one of the most important factors to your child’s success is building and maintaining a strong relationship with YOU!  Keeping the lines of communication open will help us to do this.  You can dojo message me, email me at, call the school at (919)553-0256, or write me a note and place it in your child’s homework folder or agenda. If you call the school, you may or may not be able to speak with me immediately. The secretary will take a message or forward you to my voicemail.   I will respond to you as quickly as I can. Again my preferred method of contact is class dojo.     


    Book Orders:  I will send home a Scholastic book order periodically.  These catalogs offer age appropriate books at a very affordable price.  In addition, all orders placed earn bonus points for our class so we can purchase additional items for the classroom.  You can place your order online or send the paper form back into me.  Online orders allow for credit card payments, but traditional paper form orders require a check made out directly to Scholastic.  Please take advantage of this wonderful AND affordable resource.  The kids LOVE to order new books for their home library! 


    Snack: Students are invited to bring their snacks to eat during recess. (1:15-1:45). This snack is provided by you.  Please do not send soda/candy for snack. 


    Face Masks: Students will be required to wear face masks at all times during the school day unless we are eating in the classroom. 


    When to keep your student at home: Please please please try to not send your student to school if they are feeling under the weather. Not only does it affect them in the classroom, but exposes all the other students and myself to potential sickness. 

    • If your student has been directly exposed to someone with Coronavirus.
    • If your student has a fever over 100.5 
    • If your student has an unexplained upset stomach.

  • JC Board of Education Special Session meeting set for July 29

    A special called session of Johnston County Board of Education has been called for Thursday, July 29 at 5:00 p.m. in the Evander Simpson Building in Smithfield. The open session portions of the meeting and all announcements will be accessible to the public via the livestream available online.

  • Deadline approaching for Transportation for 2021-22 School Year

    The deadline is quickly approaching for Johnston County Public Schools families who need transportation for their students during the 2021-2022 school year. Students who will be attending Early College or Career Technical Leadership Academy, which will begin on August 2nd, have until July 22nd to request transportation. Students who will begin school on August 23rd have until August 2nd to request transportation. This date is for all other JCPS Schools on the traditional school calendar.

  • Summer Meal Service begins June 7

    As the school year comes to a close, JCPS meal service will now operate at 9 sites during the summer months.

  • JCPS Outdoor Mask Mandate Lifted

    While face masks are still required in all of our indoor facilities, students, staff, and guests of our campuses are no longer required to wear a face covering when outdoors. Students and staff may continue to wear masks when participating in recess or outdoor activities if they choose to do so.

  • 2021-2022 JCPS Preschool applications now open

    The online application for the Johnston County Public Schools Preschool Program is now available. Parents who are interested in the JCPS Preschool Program are encouraged to apply early, as availability is on a first come, first served basis. The application window closes on June 30th.
