Welcome to ESL with Mrs. Groh! I am so excited to be working with our K-2 ESL students at West Smithfield Elementary. I have been teaching for 15 years in North Carolina.  I am from Chicago, and went to Hope College in Michigan for a Elementary Education/Science degree. I attended ECU for graduate classes to teach ESL. I love reading and writing with students, and hearing all the wonderful, creative, and new ideas students have to share. At home I like to read books, or be outside hiking or bird watching.

  • Beginning of Grade (BOG) Testing Letters

    As your child begins third grade, you will see a concentrated focus in ensuring students can read at or above grade level and is making progress in reading proficiency, so they can read, comprehend, integrate, and apply complex texts needed for secondary education and career success. As part of the Read to Achieve law (G.S. §115C-83.1) passed by the General Assembly in 2012, your child will take the Beginning-of-Grade 3 (BOG3) Reading Test to establish a baseline measure of beginning third-grade reading skills. This test will be administered within the first 20 days of face to face instruction, October 26 - November 23, 2020

  • School Start and End Times

    Just as a reminder, we begin letting students in the building at 8:25 in the mornings. Our tardy bell rings at 8:55. We begin dismissal at 3:55 in the afternoons.

JCPS Announcements

  • Second Semester Choice Form

    Every JCPS parent was to fill ou the Second Semester Choice form to choose either the Virtual Program OR face-to-face instruction for each of their students by Monday, Nov. 30. If you were unable to fill out the form by Nov. 30 please contact your child's school for assistance. The form was to be filled out for ALL students in grades PreK-12.

  • Holiday Meal Kit Form

    We are offering a new opportunity for our families this winter break. Parents are invited to sign up to receive holiday meal kits that will be distributed from all of our high school sites. Each meal kit will include seven days of packaged breakfast and lunch meals per child.

  • Say Something App coming to JCPS Nov. 30th

    On Nov. 30, JCPS will launch Say Something, an anonymous reporting system that lets middle and high school students, parents, staff, and community members securely share safety concerns.

  • Updated Social Distancing Procedures

    Information on social distancing in school settings has been recently updated by the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS). Upon receiving information from the NCDHHS, we consulted with the Johnston County Public Health Department on the impact these updates will have on our school system. This ongoing collaboration continues to guide our decision-making as students return to classrooms for in-person instruction.
