Mrs. Melanie O'Dell

Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Melanie O'Dell

Hello, my name is Melanie O'Dell and I will be the 5th grade science teacher this year.  I have lived in Smithfield my entire life and am a product of Johnston County Public Schools.  West Smithfield Elementary has been my home for over 14 years and I absolutely love the staff and students at our school.  I graduated from North Carolina State University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology.  Science is my love and teaching is my passion.

I have been married for over 26 years to my wonderful husband Robert.  Together, we have two amazing daughters, both of whom are attending North Carolina State University.  When I'm not teaching, I enjoy working outside in my yard and spending time with my "four legged" children (all 10 of them).  A few of my favorite things include: the WOLFPACK, coffee, chocolate, NFL football (Panthers), and listening to books on CD.

This year is going to be filled with exciting inquiry based, hands-on and minds-on learning.  I am a firm believer that science is best learned when students are actively engaged with the content.  My goal is to not just teach my students science but to foster their natural curiosity and grow a love science and of the world in which they live.  I can't wait to get started! THIS IS GOING TO BE THE BEST YEAR EVER!!
