Let me begin by introducing myself....I am Melanie O'Dell and I am the 5th grade science teacher.  I have been with Johnston County Public Schools for almost 16 years.  I was born and raised right here in Smithfield and am a product of Johnston County Public Schools.  You will soon come to know that I am passionate about science and absolutely love what I do!  I graduated from North Carolina State University with a BS degree in Biology and a BS degree in Zoology.  I am married to my wonderful husband of 28 years, and have two amazing daughters who are both currently attending North Carolina State University.  My goal for this year is to provide a safe, exciting, collaborative environment for my community of learners that will allow each and every student to grow academically, socially, and emotionally.  "Let's Go Further Together!"

  • ACCESS Testing for English Language Learners

    North Carolina schools are required to administer ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 to all students identified as English Learners (ELs) in the spring of each year to determine their progress in learning English. Each student is tested in four areas: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. This assessment helps us monitor their English language development.

    The goal of Read to Achieve legislation, which became law in July 2012, is to ensure that every student reads at or above grade level by the end of third grade. This law requires students who are not proficient on third grade reading standards after the student attempts all of the possibilities for promotion, to be placed in one of three situations for the following school year...

  • **PowerSchool Parent Portal**

    Parents, If you have not received your login for the Parent Portal, PLEASE update your child's records with a current email address. You will need to send a note with your child to have your email address updated. Please include your name, your child's name, and your current email address on the note. Mrs. Williams will then be able to update your records and activate your PowerSchool Parent Portal login.

There are screenshots to show you exactly where you need to look to find the report card.   • JCPS to Utilize New Website for Bus Updates

    Our district is launching a new portion of our website to further communicate bus delays and replacements with our families. We encourage those who have a student who utilizes our transportation to get to or from school to visit www.johnston.k12.nc.us/busdelays for updates on our school bus routes beginning Tuesday, January 18.

  • Updated COVID-19 Quarantine Guidance

    Our district is continuing to follow the guidance and recommendations from the Johnston County Public Health Department, the CDC, and the Strong Schools NC Toolkit, and we will now adhere to a 5 day quarantine period for students or staff members who tests positive for COVID-19. This is a change from the previous 10 day quarantine time.

  • JCPS offering Test to Stay Program

    Johnston County Public Schools is participating in the Test to Stay Program, a voluntary study with Duke University and the ABC Collaborative. Due to that participation our students now have more options if they are deemed a close contact to a positive COVID-19 case while at school.

  • JC Board of Education approves 2022 JCPS salary schedule

    The Johnston County Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the 2022 Johnston County Public Schools salary schedule at their regularly scheduled Dec. 14 meeting.
