My name is Amanda McKenna and this is my 17th year in education.  This will be my fourth year at Johnston County’s Early College Academy and I am truly excited to be apart of the PRIDE. At the Early College Academy, students are given opportunities to experience Problem Based Learning (PBL). PBL is a learning style where students learn through hands on activities, inquisitive thinking, and application-based projects. 

Science has always been the subject I truly loved to explore and understand in and out of the classroom. I received a Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Studies and a Master’s of Arts in Teaching Science from East Carolina University (GO PIRATES). First semester, I will be teaching Earth/Environmental Science. Earth/Environmental Science is the study of the physical constitution of the Earth and it's atmosphere. This course will also be an inquiry based science class in which, students will study Earth’s role as a body in space, processes and human influences that affect the Lithosphere, the Hydrosphere, climate, and human interactions with Earth’s geological and environmental systems. I will also be teaching Biology. Biology is the study of life or living matter in all its forms and phenomena, especially with reference to origin, growth, reproduction, structure, and behavior. This course is an inquiry based science class in which, students will study biochemistry, cells, genetics, evolution and classification, ecology, and the diversity of life.  I am looking forward to a great semester at ECA!

JCPS Announcements

  • JCPS to hold Virtual Job Fair April 21

    Johnston County Public Schools will hold a Virtual Job Fair on Wednesday, April 21. The event will be held in a Zoom Conference format from 2:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m. Candidates will have the opportunity to meet with various school principals about career opportunities in each of the district’s 47 schools.

  • Updates to COVID-19 Symptom Screenings

    New guidance given to schools in the Strong Schools NC Public Health toolkit states that daily temperature and symptom screening questions prior to entry are no longer required. We will no longer screen individuals who enter JCPS facilities for COVID-19 symptoms. This begins on Monday, April 5 for all staff and on Monday, April 12 for students upon their return from spring break.

  • 2021-2022 JCPS Preschool applications now open

    The online application for the Johnston County Public Schools Preschool Program is now available. Parents who are interested in the JCPS Preschool Program are encouraged to apply early, as availability is on a first come, first served basis. The application window closes on June 30th.

  • JCPS releases updated graduation and prom details

    Johnston County Public Schools has updated its plan to mark senior milestones, including prom and graduation while adhering to guidance from the Johnston County Public Health Department and the CDC in regards to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

    The Johnston County Board of Education voted to return Pre-K - 5th grade to Plan A, four days per week, beginning on Monday, March. 1.
