With the return of face to face instruction, we are excited to start back our Before School Care and After School Care/My Kids Club programs.
As your child begins third grade, you will see a concentrated focus in ensuring students can read at or above grade level and is making progress in reading proficiency, so they can read, comprehend, integrate, and apply complex texts needed for secondary education and career success. As part of the Read to Achieve law (G.S. §115C-83.1) passed by the General Assembly in 2012, your child will take the Beginning-of-Grade 3 (BOG3) Reading Test to establish a baseline measure of beginning third-grade reading skills. This test will be administered within the first 20 days of face to face instruction, October 26 - November 23, 2020
Good news! School Picture Day is coming soon. Don’t miss this opportunity to capture this year’s memory. Lifetouch will be at our school on Tuesday, September 22 and Friday, September 25. Pictures will be by APPOINTMENT ONLY and must be scheduled online with Lifetouch
Each grade level will have their own designated time to hear from their child's teachers, learn about parent expectations to help with virtual learning and ask any questions you may have. This is a great opportunity to chat with your child's teacher in a virtual setting!
Our school counselors here at South Smithfield Elementary, Ms. April Gibson (K-2) and Ms. Jennifer Whitlock (3-5) have an abundance of resources available to help students, parents and famliies during this time. They have created their own website with a virtual classroom, activities and resources.
South Smithfield Elementary will open for curbside service for meal pickups on August 17th. The lunch service time is 11:00am-12:00 pm Monday through Friday
As the school year comes to a close, please note that JCPS meal service will now operate at 9 sites during the summer months, rather than the previous 14. Summer meal service will begin Monday, June 1. Curbside meals will be served Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Benson Middle, Clayton Middle, Four Oaks Elementary, North Johnston Middle, Princeton Elementary, Selma Elementary, Smithfield-Selma High, West Clayton Elementary, and West Smithfield Elementary.
Attention parents of 4-year-olds: Are you interested in your child attending a free preschool program? The NC PreK program is designed to provide 4-year-old children with positive early learning experiences that support their development and prepare them for Kindergarten.
School may be closed but learning for our dynamic dolphins is not! Our teachers remain committed to providing learning opportunities for your students until the end of May as we still value the importance of continued academic experiences. Please click for more information...
Every JCPS parent must fill out the Second Semester Choice form to choose either the Virtual Program OR face-to-face instruction for each of their students. The Second Semester Choice form is to be filled out for ALL students in grades PreK-12. If a child is going to participate in face-to-face instruction for the second semester, the parent will be asked to fill out transportation information for the student in the form. A form for each student should be completed by Nov. 30.
Information on social distancing in school settings has been recently updated by the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS). Upon receiving information from the NCDHHS, we consulted with the Johnston County Public Health Department on the impact these updates will have on our school system. This ongoing collaboration continues to guide our decision-making as students return to classrooms for in-person instruction.
