Mrs. Betty Buchanan

Welcome!! My name is Betty Buchanan and I'm teaching 4th grade this year. This is my 21st year teaching and my 16th year at MCES.  I started my teaching career at South Harnett Primary teaching 2nd grade. The next year, I transferred to Cleveland Elementary where I taught 3rd grade for 4 years.  Then, when MCES opened, I served on the committee to prepare to open the school and taught for 2 years, 1 in 3rd and then 1 in 2nd.  At that time, I was expecting our first child and we decided for me to stay home.  I ended up staying home for 9 years until our 2nd child was ready to start school.  At which time, I came back to MCES, again teaching 3rd grade. Later, I moved to 4th grade, where I still am today.  McGee's is my 2nd home!! I love my students, I love teaching and I love teaching 4th grade!!  I'm a native of Johnston County and graduated from South Johnston High School and UNC Chapel Hill.  I live in Benson with my wonderful husband Brian, our 2 amazing children, Benjamin and Brianna, and our 3 cats, JJ, Turbo, and Bella.  I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, playing the piano, and church.  I am passionate about reading and have a genuine love for learning  which I hope to instill in  your child!! This  year,  we only have 5 4th grade teachers.  Which means, my class will have me for all subjects and will not be changing classes.   I taught all subjects last year as well, and enjoyed teaching just one group of students and the ability to get to know all my students and families more closely. I look forward to sharing the same experience with you and your child!! It's going to be a great year!!  You can reach me through our class dojo or by phone at 919-894-7161 or email @  I look forward to a wonderful year of learning and growing together!
