Mr. Derrick Pate
My name is Derrick Pate. I was born and raised right here in Johnston County, and I have two children in the Johnston County school system. I attended UNC-Pembroke and Campbell University and have been teaching for 21 years. I enjoy being active and outdoors and enjoy the energy that the students bring to school everyday. I look forward to working collaboratively with the students and learning with them this year!
Schedule- I have finalized what should be our google meet schedule for the next 2 weeks. Your child will be scheduled to meet with me at least 3 times on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for shorter time frames. Our second grade team feels that our students handle live meetings better for shorter time frames. ALL students will meet together for morning meeting. Students will then meet with me for two 20 minute small group lessons, one for math and one for reading. Some students will meet with me for additional times for target time. Here is a link to my schedule and if you scroll down, you will see the groups and times. The first schedule is an example of what a student's day could be broken down into and it closely follows what our schedule in school will look like. You DO NOT have to have your child do those exact activities at those times. It is just a guide so you can see how long some of these activities could take. If your child finishes before the time frame is up...that is ok, it happens at school all the time! Slides for the next day will continue to be posted the night before at 6:00pm. Students will still have work to do independently each day.
Wednesdays- It's been decided that Wednesdays at FOES will be asynchronous..meaning nothing will be live. No google meets this day. Students will have pre-recorded morning meetings with a ticket out the door to be turned in to help count for attendance for that day. Slides will be posted on google classroom like every other day. When not in professional development or other meetings, I will use Wednesdays to conduct parent meetings via google meet, zoom or phone if needed.
Attendance- I am going to start putting an attendance google form on the morning meeting slide for each day. As soon as students login, they should fill that out and send it to me. If I don't get a response by 11:30am, I will have to mark your child absent. Wednesdays will have a ticket out the door to go along with the pre-recorded morning meeting instead of the normal attendance form.
Lexia and Imagine Math- Students will be able to login to both of these programs beginning next week. I will be sending login info later. Students need to do both of these independently, especially the placement test. We want an accurate account of what students can and cannot do so that we can target our instruction to best meet their needs. I will try to send video instructions for this as well.
I know this is a lot of information and my schedule might look confusing at first. The most important part is to look for the groups and times for their small group meetings. This is at the bottom of the linked document. Please reach out with questions!

Participants will be able to visit the virtual spaces for each program and talk with program coordinators and students from 6:00-8:00 pm.
The Johnston County Board of Education voted to return all Pre-K and EC-Self Contained students to Plan B, four days per week, beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 19. These students will participate in face-to-face instruction on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, with Wednesday serving as a remote learning day. All other students in grades K-12 will remain on Plan C until Monday, Feb. 1.
On December 8th 2020, the Johnston County School Board of Education voted to return to Plan C (Remote Learning), we would like to provide an update to parents and guardians of options to complete state-mandated End-of-Course (EOC) and Career/Technical Education Post Assessment testing.
