  • Curriculum

The topics we will be studying in science this year are those outlined in the Essential Standards for North Carolina and include:

    • Chemistry
    • The Hydrosphere (Earth's freshwater and ocean resources)
    • Oceans
    • Energy Resources and Conservation
    • Ecosystems
    • The Evolution of organisms and landforms
    • Microbiology and Biotechnology
    • Earth History and Evolution
  • CvMS Grading Policy

The following areas will be evaluated:

    • Practice Assignments: provide students with feedback and guide instruction (include Classwork, Warm-ups, Homework, Cooperative Learning Activities and some Quizzes)
    • Mastery Assignments: measure student mastery of a given goal/concept or skill (include Quizzes, Tests, Projects, Presentations and Skills Checks)

Practice Assignments will not used to calculate a student's numerical grade.  Their assessment will constitute part of a behavioral score that will be included in progress reports to parents.  These and other behaviors will be assessed according to the CvMS Behavioral Rubric.

Only Mastery Assignments will be used in the calculation of a student's final, numerical grade.  Students who do not complete Mastery Assignments will receive a grade of incomplete.  Once completed, these scores will become a factor in determining a student's final grade.  Athletes will not qualify to participate in sports until all Mastery Assignments are completed.

  • Class Assignments and Homework

Current topic(s) of study are posted on a weekly basis.  This includes classroom activities/labs, quiz and test dates and related homework for the week.  Use the Science 8 Learning Guide on Google Classroom to access this information.  A similar list of assignments/activities is written on the board daily.  Students are encouraged to record this information in their agendas.  Please note that changes to assignments/dates may occur and these changes may not be reflected on the website.  Your child will be given any changes to record in their agenda.
