The topics we will be studying in science this year are those outlined in the Essential Standards for North Carolina and include:

    • Ecosystems
    • The Hydrosphere (Earth's Freshwater and Ocean Resources)
    • Chemistry (Properties and Changes in Matter)
    • Energy Resources and Conservation
    • Microbiology
    • Biotechnology
    • Molecular Biology
    • Earth History (Geological Evolution)
    • Biological Evolution and Genetics
  • CvMS Grading Policy

The following areas will be evaluated and used to determine a student's numerical grade:

    • Practice Assignments (10%): provide students with feedback and guide instruction.  These include Warm-Ups which are given daily at the beginning of each class period.  These questions not only serve as a review of content but are also representative of those used for assessment.
    • Classwork/Labs (30%): reinforce instruction and strengthen a student's understanding of the content.
    • Assessments (60%): measure student mastery of a given goal/concept or skill.  These include Quizzes, Tests and Projects

Note: ONLY Quizzes and Tests on which a student earns a score of less than 80% may be retaken.  A Qualifying Assignment must be completed before a student retake a quiz or test.  The maximum score that a student may earn on any retest is 80%.

  • Class Assignments and Homework

Topics of study and all assignments are posted weekly on Google Classroom.  This includes classroom activities/labs, quiz and test dates and related homework for the week.  Use the Science 8 Planbook on Google Classroom to access this information.  Assignments/activities are also written on the board daily.  Students are encouraged to record this information in their agendas.  Please note that changes to assignments/dates may occur.  Your child will always be informed of these changes.
