Mrs. Christen VanNewkirk

I hope you had a great holiday and I look forward to working with you this semester!

Welcome to my Class!

My name is Christen VanNewkirk and I have taught 8th grade math and Math I for 10 years.  I am passionate about integrating high-cognitive demanding tasks into daily lessons that require students to collaborate, investigate and discover mathematics together!  Students are naturally curious about mathematics but my role is to provide students the opportunity and classroom environment that is conducive to such enriching lessons!   I consider it an honor and a privilege to be part of an amazing staff and to teach your child at Cleveland High School.  I am driven for success, passionate about teaching and expect nothing but excellence within myself and my students!

In 2006, I graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Mathematics and a minor in Biology through Michigan State University, and received my teaching certification one year later.  I am certified in Mathematics (6-12), Science (6-8) and Biology (9-12).  I aspire to grow continuously within my teaching profession and constantly seek out ways to improve myself to better meet the needs of my students.  A thirst for knowledge is contagious among students, and professionals alike and I lead by example!  In the 2010-2011 and 2014-2015 school years, I was selected as Coats-Erwin Middle School’s Teacher of the Year.  Receiving a Masters of Arts in Education (2011) and a National Board Certification (2014) were pivotal experiences in my professional growth, however, I appreciate that these are simply stepping stones for further development.  In 2016, I obtained my Academically and Intellectually Gifted Add-on Licensure through Wingate University.   Continuous growth is necessary at every level, so my current goal is to gain a greater respect for the connection and progression of concepts among math courses from the middle school and high school levels, which is a key factor in moving to high school this year.  If at any time you have a question/concern for me, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me at christenvannewkirk@johnston.k12.nc.us or you can call me at  919-934-2455 ext. 1918.   I look forward to working with you this year!
