James Owings
James Owings currently serves as the band and general music teacher here at Smithfield Middle School. Prior to Smithfield, Mr. Owings was the director of bands, strings, chorus and color guard at Farmville Central High School. Mr. Owings also serves as an adjudicator for USBands and local NC marching band and winter guard competitions. He lives in Clayton with his two children, Leo and Eloise.
Mr. Owings is beyond excited to begin his work at Smithfield Middle School. He is committed to making band a lifelong experience that begins in middle school, continues in high school and even after graduation!

As we prepare for the end of the 2022-2023 academic year, please mark your calendar with the dates listed below. It is extremely important that your child attends school daily to prepare for the upcoming tests. Please continue to encourage your child to work hard and do their best as we prepare for a successful end to our academic year.

Knights in New IB Armor Family Night On Mar 28th
Come and join us for our Knights in New Armor Family Night on March 28th from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. Learn more about our journey to become an IB World School. Student work will be displayed as well as booths from community organizations, food, and prizes.!

Get your copy of our award-winning literary magazine and yearbook on sale now. The presale price is $20. Only a small quantity of yearbooks will be available at a later date for $25.

SmMS Zaxby's Spirit Night will be on Thursday, January 19, 2023 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.

Multilingual Family NIght
In order to build connections and strong partnerships with our multilingual families, we will have a Multilingual Family Night on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 from 6:30 to 7:30. Please see attached flyer.

High School Choice Programs Information Night
Johnston County Public Schools invites STUDENTS and PARENTS to learn more about our Choice Program options for high school students at Smithfield-Selma High on November 17, 2022.

Information Night for High School Choice Application Programs for the 2022-2023 School Year
Information Night for High School Choice Application Programs for the 2022-2023 school year will be held virtually from 5:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday, November 30th for our 8th grade families. Families will be able to virtually explore the booths beginning at 5:00 PM, and a live stream presentation from the Choice Program coordinators will begin around 5:30 PM.

Current 8th graders and their families are invited to the Career & Technical Leadership Academy's (CTLA) Open House.

AVID - Sponsored Food Drive
Help by donating non-perishable items such as canned food, boxed meals, bagged foods, etc. Donations can be dropped off at Smithfield Middle School from November 7 - 18.

Winter Sports Tryouts
Tryouts for all Winter Sports will begin on Monday, November 14. Tryouts will be November 14-16. Girls' tryouts will be held from 3:30 to 5:00. Boys' tryouts will be held from 5:00 to 6:30.

SmMS McDonald's Spirit Night
SmMS McDonald's Spirit Night will be held at the McDonalds at 884 W Market St, Smithfield, NC 27577. Spirit Night will be on Thursday, October 13, 2022, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. A portion of all proceeds from dining in or the drive-thru will be donated to Smithfield Middle School. Please come out to support our school!

Fall Picture Day!
Fall Pictures will be taken on Monday, October 3, 2022. Forms will be sent home with ordering information. If your student is paying with a check or cash, the money will need to be brought in on October 3rd. Lifetouch also does online orders. Please see below for ordering information.

Updated School Nutrition Information for 2022-23
We hope that you and your student have already noticed some of the exciting new food and meal opportunities we are offering in our cafeterias this school year. Our new options will include more fresh produce, vegetarian options, and opportunities for students to customize their meal choice. These new offerings will be available at both breakfast and lunch.
