Congratulations to Michele Mason, our Classified Employee of the Month!
As a teacher assistant at West View Elementary, Michele Mason consistently goes above and beyond, supporting students in the classroom, on the bus, and wherever she is needed.
Her patience, dependability, and genuine care for her school community shine through in her willingness to lend a hand and ensure tasks are completed well.
Whether supporting students academically, helping them feel safe and cared for, or finding ways to brighten their day, Ms. Mason brings compassion to everything she does.
Originally from New Mexico, Mason moved to North Carolina in 2012. She joined the JCPS team in January 2017 at West Johnston High before transferring to West View Elementary in 2018. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with family, watching movies, listening to music, and traveling.
How did you feel when you learned you had been named JCPS Classified Employee of the Month?
I felt honored and grateful to be recognized when I learned I had been named Employee of the Month. It was a meaningful recognition of the work I have been fortunate to do alongside my colleagues and students. Receiving the news was a special moment in my career, and I will always remember it with appreciation.
What brought you to Johnston County Public Schools, and what keeps you passionate about the work you do?
A former colleague told me about opportunities with JCPS, which encouraged me to join the district in 2017. Because I come from a family of educators, I have always understood the value of education and the importance of supporting students.
My aunt, whom I have long admired for her kindness and patience, has also had a lasting influence on how I approach my work. Her example continues to remind me to lead with compassion, listen carefully, and make a positive difference whenever I can.
What is one thing your role has taught you that you will carry with you throughout your career?
My role as a teacher assistant has taught me that patience, active listening, and flexibility are essential when working with others. Taking the time to listen and understand different needs builds trust and creates stronger relationships. These lessons continue to guide me throughout my career as I learn, adapt, and support those around me.
How do you believe your work contributes to creating a positive experience for students and staff?
I believe my work helps create a positive environment by being supportive, patient, and willing to help others. I want students and staff to feel valued, respected, and cared for because everyone matters.
What do meaningful relationships with students, staff, families, or colleagues mean to you, and how do you build those connections?
I enjoy working with my colleagues and am glad to help wherever needed. We build strong relationships by communicating, supporting one another, and working together to help students succeed.
What is one moment in your career at JCPS that you will always remember? What made it meaningful to you?
The one moment I will always remember was during the pandemic, when we had to maintain social distancing. It was a difficult time, but we came together, adjusted, and continued to support our students, families, and colleagues.
The experience was meaningful to me because it showed how important it is to stay connected, support one another, and keep making a difference in students' lives, even through challenging times.
