All 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will go through fitness testing.  Using the framework of the the 5 Health Related Fitness Components, we use 5 different tests: Curlups (muscular endurance), Shuttle Run (flexibility), Pushups(muscular strength), Pacer(cardiovascular endurance) and the V-Stretch(flexibililty). Students that achieve the standards for each of the fitness tests will receive the Fitness award at the end of the school year.


    CURLUPS(muscular endurance)

    A test of abdominal strength and endurance

    Hands must be criss-crossed and on your shoulders; knees need to be bent and feet flat on the floor.  When you come up, elbows should touch your thighs and then when you go down, the back of your head should touch the mat. This test is for 1 minute

    PUSHUPS(muscular strength)

    A test of upper body strength

    Hands should be under the shoulders with fingers facing forward. Keeping your back and knees straight lower your body until there is a 90-degree angle-- then back up

    SHUTTLE RUN(flexibility)

    To measure speed and agility

    2 parallel lines are 30 feet apart and 2 erasers are placed behind one of the lines. Students start behind the opposite line. On the signal "go!", the student runs to the blocks, picks up one,runs back to the starting line, places the block behind the line, runs back and picks up the second block, and runs back across the starting line.

    PACER TEST(Measures cardiovascular endurance)

    The students run as long as possible with continuous movement back and forth across a 20-meter space at a specified pace that gets faster each minute.

    V-SIT REACH (flexibility)vstretch

    A test of the ablility of a joint to move through a range of motion

    The students sit on the floor with legs straight out in front of them.  Feet are 12" apart.  With hands on top of each other, palms down, and legs flat, the student reaches along the measuring line as far as possible.  The score is measured in inches.
