    Weather Words

    Air Masses and Fronts

air mass - a large region of the atmosphere where the air has similar properties throughout

front - a boundary between air masses with different temperatures

cold front - a boundary where cold air moves in under a mass of warm air

warm front - a boundary where warm air moves in over a mass of cold air

occluded front - a front  formed where a cold front moves in under a warm front

stationary front - an unmoving front where a cold air mass and a warm air mass meet

    Atmosphere and Air Temperature

insolation - the amount of the Sun's energy that reaches Earth at a given time and place

atmosphere - the blanket of gases that surrounds the Earth

troposphere - the layer of the atmosphere closest to Earth's surface

air pressure - the force put on a given area by the weight of the air above it

weather - what the lower atmosphere is like at any given time and place

barometer - a device for measuring air pressure

    Water in the Air

water vapor - water in the form of a gas

humidity - the amount of water vapor in the air

evaporation - the changing of a liquid to a gas

relative humidity - a comparison between condensation and evaporation

condensation - the changing of a gas to a liquid

    Clouds

stratus clouds - a cloud that forms a blanket like layer

cumulus clouds - a puffy cloud that appears to rise up from a flat bottom

cirrus clouds - a high-altitude cloud with a feather like shape, made of ice crystals

fog - a (stratus) cloud that forms at ground level

precipitation - any form of water particles that falls from the atmosphere and reaches the ground (ex.  rain, snow, sleet, hail)

water cycle - the continuous movement of water between Earth's surface and the air, changing from liquid to gas to liquid

    Air Pressure and Wind

wind - air the moves horizontally

convection cell - a circular pattern of air rising, air sinking, and wind

sea breeze - wind that blows from sea to land

land breeze - wind that blows from land to sea

Coriolis effect - the curving of the path of a moving object caused by Earth's rotating

isobar - a line on a weather map connecting places with equal air pressure

wind vane - a device that indicates wind direction

anemometer - a device that measures wind speed

jet stream - a band of fast moving air high in the atmosphere that affects weather patterns

gulf stream - a warm ocean current flowing N from the Gulf of Mexico along the east coast of the United States

El nino - a warming of water in the Pacific Ocean

La Nina - a cooling of water in the Pacific Ocean

Hurricane - a swirling storm that forms over warm water off the coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean

Thunderstorm - a storm of lightning and thunder, with rain, gusty winds and sometimes hail produced by cumulonimbus clouds

Tornado - a violently destructive funnel-shaped windstorm that occurs over land
