• Annotating Poetry

    1. Read poem carefully. At least twice.
    2. Look up any unknown words and define them.
    3. Label rhyme scheme.
    4. Identify figurative language (simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, imagery)
    5. Identify sound devices (repetition, alliteration, assonance, consonance, onomatopoeia)
    6. Make notes about meaning and write any questions you might have.
    7. Consider word choice. Circle words that seem important. Do they have the same tone (happy, sad, enthusiastic?)
    8. Label other characteristics of the poem.
    9. Reread the poem.

    After annotating, answer these questions:

    1. What is the theme of the poem?
    2. What poetic elements does the poet use to convey the theme?
    3. What is the mood of the poem?
    4. What poetic elements does the poet use to convey mood?
    5. How does figurative language impact the poem?
